Mangalore, Jun 8: Tension prevailed at the district jail here on Sunday June 8, when the undertrials launched an attack at policemen and jail staff, opposing the shifting of two alleged criminals to another jail.
Faisal and Falak, said to be notorious criminals, were to be shifted to Dharwad jail on Sunday. When the Barke police along with ACP and the jail officials were about to get the two out of their cell, the other undertrials who were present their began attacking the officials.
It is said that nearly 25-30 undertrials grew angry with the police for shifting Faisal and Falak to Dharwad jail, and began attacking them. They also threw a TV, eggs, tomatoes, chilli powder, glass items and whatever they could lay their hands on.
As a result, four police officials, including ACP Tilakchandra, SI Shariff, inspector Maledevar were seriously injured and rushed to Wenlock hospital.
Some of the KSRP staff were also injured, it is learnt.
A few undertrials too sustained injuries, and sources said some of them inflicted injuries on their bodies themselves so as to get out of the prison.
Due to the incident, Falak and Faisal were shifted back into the district jail.
Speaking to reporters, police commissioner R Hitendra said that the incident took place when the police were about to shift Falak and Faisal from the district jail to Dharwad jail. Faisal and Falak demanded to know why they were being shifted and what mistake they had committed. Soon, arguments arose and the other undertrials came to the duo's support and the verbal arguments snowballed into an attack, he said, adding that four officials, other staff and some of the undertrials were injured in the incident.
