Mangalore, Jun 8: Deputy Lokayukta (II) Justice Subhash B Adi on Saturday June 7 held a day-long grievance redress meet at Town Hall here, during which over a hundred cases put forward by the public were disposed off.
Briefing the media at the end of the day, Justice Adi said he settled 119 cases pertaining to Bantwal and Mangalore taluks.
The grievance redress meet received 119 complaints, of which 40 were fresh, filed on June 7. He said the violation of building by-laws was found and considered seriously. Refering to a particular complaint, he said most of the parking lots of buildings in the city were converted for the establishment of shops.
MCC commissioner Ajith Kumar Hegde assured that steps would be taken to ensure the eviction of shops established in the space reserved for parking. He said many complaints were filed with the local bodies (gram panchayats) pertaining to land issues.
"If the problem is not redressed by the bodies which have given an undertaking, contempt of undertaking will be issued. The grievances of the complainant has to be given priority. The problems should be redressed in the interest of the public," Justice Adi said.
Across the state, till date 15,000 greviences were filed, out of which 11,000 complaints have been disposed of. The remaing will be resolved in 6 months," he explained.
Violation of parking space in the building
The deputy Lokayukta (II) Justice Subhash B Adi looked into the complaint made by G Hanumant Kamat, in which he alleged that the town planning authority, despite learning about the violation of rules during the construction of the building at Bajar has not taken any action.
The deputy Lokayukta lashed out at the town planning officer. During the argument, the complainant made serious allegations against the MCC, which he said was callous and had not taken any action against the conversion of parking space in the building basements to accomodate shops.
Justice Subhash Adi the instructed the MCC and MUDA commissioner to inspect such cases and evict the shops. He took an undertaking from the MCC commissioner in this regard told him to ensure that buildings in the city are in compliance with the building by-laws.
Priority to health
A complaint to evict the wine shop located at Kenjar sparked laughter among the people gathered. The deputy Lokayukta left the president of the gram panchayat red-faced asking her personal opinion on the establishment liquor shops, on which she remained mum. He instructed the DC to review the license granted to the shop as the residents of the place demand the cancellation of license. The deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim acting quckly said if the demand to cancel the license was genuine, he would do so.
Many complaints regarding land issues, police apathy, illegal establishment of schools and many more were settled.
