Bangalore: 19-year-old girl kills grandmother, throws party with loot

Bangalore, Jun 6 (DHNS): Twenty six days ago, on May 10, when a 72-year-old home-alone woman was murdered at Binnypet here, the police had suspected that it was yet another routine case of murder for gain.

However, it has now transpired that, Ramaratnamma, the elderly woman, was murdered by her granddaughter who is just 19.

Harshitha, the suspect, is currently employed with a private firm in the city. She started working after she failed to clear the SSLC exams. Harshitha was not happy with her earnings, which were not enough for her to lead a lavish life.

But for this, the J J Nagar police would not have suspected her role in the murder. Soon after the murder on May 10, the police, who were keeping a watch on the family members, suddenly noticed a dramatic change in Harshitha’s lifestyle.

She spent over Rs 50,000 on just one party which she threw for her friends at Mantri Square in Malleswaram. Subsequently, the police started gathering more information about her. The police said they came across a suspicious number in her call log, which gave them further leads.

Thereafter, they took her into custody on June 2 and questioned her. During the interrogation, she broke down and confessed to killing her grandmother, the police said.Shaken by the turn of events, her parents on Thursday attempted suicide at a lodge in Shimoga but were rescued in time.

During the interrogation, Harshitha described the murder. On May 10, she returned from office around 3 pm, when she knew that her father Shekhar (45), a sales executive, mother Lakshmi (38), a domestic help, and sister Varshitha (21) would still be at work.

Her grandmother, who had come from Mysore on May 8, was busy washing clothes. The old woman had in her possession Rs 14 lakh cash and ornaments.

Harshitha, who was aware of the valuables, demanded money and ornaments. When her grandmother refused, the police said, she hit the elderly woman with a rolling pin before strangulating her with wet clothes. Ramaratnamma collapsed.

Harshitha lost no time in snatching gold chains and bangles. Later, she pledged the ornaments with a private finance firm and collected Rs 1.29 lakh to start a new lifestyle, the police said.

The case took a different turn with the suicide attempt of Shekhar, Lakshmi and Varshitha. The trio had checked into a lodge, Atithi Comforts, on NT Road near the Shimoga bus stand and consumed poison used to kill bed bugs early Thursday morning. Timely hospitalisation saved them.

Milliner Grand Mother, Daughter is house maid, Grand Daughter SSLC out and working may be for 3,000/- to 5,000/- in a private firm. I think, some problem is there with the Grandmothers 'way of thinking,. May be the Old Generation children of the Grand Mother are afraid of talking to their mother and the new generation grandchild believe in 'equality' or equal distribution of income or wealth. So, you decide where the problem lies.

With the advent of crass consumerism and the continuous bombardment of media, opening of malls, pubs, easy access to money in the hands of youngsters due to high pay packets in the IT/ITES sector has created a group of peers who have big influence on the middle and poor class impressionable minds, who to fulfill their wishes to live up to their peer's standards go to any extent!!

Numerous such incidents have occurred in Mumbai for the lure mobiles, bikes, cars, pocket money etc.!!

Unless the rich poor divide and increasing polarization of wealth and craze for material objects is not checked such incidents are bound to increase!!

one should not compare brave lady onake obavva with this lady. It is completely out of context. Onake obavva faught for freedom. But this lady took away some others freedom.

Impact of western culture , I need not explain it here. You will see it in everyday news!

Well said Mr. Pradeep, the youngsters in Bangalore have spending power on account of their fat wages, specially the Techies and agents in call centers. The under privileged seeing the splurging going on in malls / restaurants and bars, resort to unethical means to be on par with these, also to blame are the politicians and bureaucrats who have easy money. Cost of living in Bangalore has sky rocketed making life tough for the middle class and retired people. Further people here expect large tips for any service, whether they deserve or not, even cabbies round off to the nearest hundred and auto wallahs to a ten.

no way you can excuse this girl. I am telling you, excuse, counseling and all will not help these youth now. They should be punished severely and only this fear will stop them. It's too much now a days. So, if confirmed , then please execute her or ensure life time sentence so that she can spend her life why the hell she committed such a mistake. Killing her own grand mother. No wonders others tried to commit suicide. because nobody can digest or accept this cruel fact. Please keep posting the progress until a verdict is given eliminating her.

Now all the grandparents will see their grandchildren in suspicion!
Those who attended the 'grand party' given by the girl must be vomiting after knowing the crime.
Why parents has to commit suicide if their child/children commit sinful act? Parents cant expect their children to be sober all the time, their normal mind can turn into criminal mind at any time to meet their greed's & desires.

While the news is shocking! It is time to introspect!! Bangalore, along with other Indian cities is turning into a cesspool of money spenders - all in the name of fake 'lifestyles'. If today's generation is not seen in pubs and malls then they think they are outcasts. I have seen them sipping over one single cup of coffee for over 3 hours in Coffee day and talking to no end as if they are making earth shaking decisions!!! It's best if the parents begin to teach them value of hard earned money and judicious spending.

Was it Ben Franklin that had said "“The Eyes of Other People Are the Eyes That Ruin Us. If All but Myself Were Blind I Should Want Neither Fine Clothes, Fine Houses nor Fine Furniture”??
