Gurpur accident: Protest ends after assurances to install speed breakers

The protest by locals at Gurpur following an accident on Thursday June 5 morning was called off after officials as well as Sri Rajashekharananda Swamiji of Gurupur Vajradehi Math assured that speed breakers would be installed along the highway stretch and the road would be widened too.

After futile attempts by tahsildar Manjunath to convince the protestors, DCP K V Jagadish arrived at the spot and told the agitators that he has already spoke to officials of the highway authority about installing speed breakers.

"Four to six speed breakers will installed and two men will deputed to guard the highway at two check points," he told the protestors.

However, the people refused to be convinced and said that the such assurances have come from officials many times in the past, but no action was taken.

The Swamiji of Gurpur Vajradehi Math then came to the spot and spoke to the protestors, who told him that they do not believe in the assurances given by the officials.

In response, the Swamiji said, "The tahsildar has asured me that speed breakers will be installed by tomorrow (Friday June 6) evening," to which the protestors replied that if it does not happen they would protest in the premises of the Math.

"If the speed breakers are not installed within the deadline, I will join you in protest. We will protest in tahsildar's office," the Swamiji told the locals.

Finally, convinced by the Swamiji's assurances, the locals agreed to withdraw the protest.

Speaking to media persons, Sri Vajradehi Swamiji said, "The tahsildar has assured that four speed breakers will be installed on this stretch of road. The notification for road widening has already been issued and by June 23, the survey will be done, after which the widening work will begin. If all this is not done as promised, I will take the initiative to launch a massive protest."

Earlier Update

Chaos erupted at Gurpur here on Thursday June 5 after a young boy was hit by an Eicher tempo while he was waiting for the school van.

It is said that, the 6-year-old Rohit, studying in first standard in Pompei school, was waiting along with his mother for the school van on Thursday morning, when a speeding tempo hit him.

The boy was severely injured and rushed to a hospital.

The driver of the tempo fled the spot soon after the accident.

As soon as the news of the accident spread, angry locals gathered at the spot and began a flash protest. They blocked roads leading to heavy traffic jam in the area. They also damaged the tempo which caused the accident and burnt tyres to express their ire.

The protestors demanded the road at Gurpur be widened. They said they had appealed to the authorities several times in the past to widen the road, but all proposals were stalled as there are temple and mosque on either sides and the road cannot be widened without them giving up land.

The protestors demanded that the deputy commissioner and the MLA and MP come to the spot.

Police rushed to the spot and are trying to pacify the protestors.

Tahsildar Manjunath arrived at the spot, but his efforts to coax the protestors into withdrawing the agitation went in vain. Instead, the protestors raised slogans and prevented the tahsildar from leaving the spot until the DC himself comes.

It is learnt that DC is on a visit to Charmady ghat on work.

More details awaited.

Its very painful for parents to be helpless in such tragedies No parent can see their child go before them. May God grant eternal life to this child and give the strength to his parent to bear the grief though, I know it is impossible. So many accidents are taking places these heavy vehicle drivers drive without mercy and with blood in their eyes killing innocent public and even small children because they know very well that they will come out on bail . it is becos of this bail money which the cops, lawyers and other clerics enjoy that no criminal whether rapist or murderers get harsh punishment. The people of Gurpur should ensure justice to this family see that the driver is jailed his licence terminated forever. This way there will be a fright and they will not drive recklessly thinking they are the kings of the roads.

It is so sad that a young one 06 years boy dies again in a road accident. Roads need to be widened come what may and shops by the road side need to be given space after road work is done.
Most importantly trace the tempo driver, punish him publicly and suspend his licence, only if authorities start doing this, drivers will be careful
We do know it takes few innocent lives to start thinking and implementing rules in our country. Does anyone think what would parents of this child go through for rest of their lives to live with this trauma.
Come on authorities wake up and act.!! Let us not wait fr few more innocent lives to go.!

rather then going for short term solution.why dont u prefer some long term solution.Y dont u think of widening the roads ,gurpur has become a very dangerous spot of accident, taking number of lifes, with very narrow roads with no space and no footpaths.By introducing speed-breakers will not bring end to the problem, its only a short term solution to resolve the present issue.

Requesting the higher authorities to think of widening the road providing good footpaths and clear view of the vehicles coming from both the sides

Installing speed breakers or broadening roads is not the solution. Its tougher driving laws which can be better solution for most accidents. Broader roads wont guarantee lesser number of road accidents but a good and safe driver can.

the road is too narrow for the modern day heavy vehicles to pass through this passage.olden days it was okay with limited no. of vehicles.if 2 buses cant pass through the main highway or the road that leads to the city then there should be an alternative for travelling OR the road has to be widened.those waiting for vehicles to pick them up have no space to stand beside the road.they have to stand on the main road and accidents are bound to happen.concerned officials need to work urgently on this.

I have been travelling Kaikamba - Mangalore road since my childhood as i live in kaikamba. Widening of road in gurpur is the need of the hour. Widening is not only enough, converting it into two way road untill mangalore will be highly appreciated.

It is such a busy road and not any development has taken place since years. So people please protest until the road work doesnt start.

If govt doesnt have enough budget to cover this cost, then please give the tender to any private firm and let them set up a toll gate for a recovery.

But at any cost we need this work to be done. Really i feel very sorry for the child, and couldnt be a part of this protest as being a localite.

Just close your eyes and feel it was your dear one and then see if you want locals to protest or be cool and relax. yes, some times it happens as mob is created unnecessarily. this is not a communal issue for someone to create tension. It was in front of the helpless mother her son killed by this bas..rd. If it was your dear one, you may realise why the locals protested so strongly.

Road Widening is not the solution, SLOWING DOWN IS.

Every time I drive on roads in Kuwait or in India there is one common factor: no one cares for each other or for themselves.

People drive fast, they drive recklessly, they have no concern for safety of themselves, their wives, children riding with them or other drivers and their passengers or the pedestrians.

And after all the speeding and reckless driving you get to save a maximum of three to five minutes on short distances and maybe an hour or two on interstate journeys.

Is this saving of 5 minutes or one or two hours worth the lives that we see lost in traffic accidents?

Pedestrians too are least concerned of their own safety. I have seen parents with children who do not show care for their child's safety they dont hold the child's hand and/or expose the child to the oncoming traffic while they walk safely away from the traffic.

And all this has worsened as we become more rich, more literate, and more technologically advanced.

Pertaining to Moodbidri-Mangalore road, this road already converted to NH but in paper only.Road did not widen,no proper maint and road signals etc. This road very very busy that we can not overtake the vehicle.NH officials need to take urgent attention where ever required between Moodbidri- Managlore.MAY SOUL REST IN PEACE.FLASH RASTA ROKO WILL NOT BRING ANY INFLUENCE IN THE MINDS OF CONCERNED BUT CONSTRUCTIVE PRESSURES FROM VARIOUS QUARTERS OF THE SOCIETY PLUS RELIGIOUS LEADERS AND POLITICAL LEADERS COULD DO MIRACLE.

These tempos travelling inside the city are very very harmful, I lost around 50000 rupees bcs of them. That to some 3 wheeler tempos can rotate beyond 180 degrees. Perhaps recession is causing them to travel empty here and there. They are big menace especially in Bangalore also.

The major cause of road accidents is the reckless driving by buses and tempos , not heeding to elementary traffic rules . Over speeding, overtaking without bothering to check adequate leeway, driving bumper to bumper at speed, honking for no reason, jamming brakes for picking up stray passengers at irregular halts and such other violations are the reasons . Vamanjoor stretch, Falnir road, State Bank turning, are the critical points. No amount of road widening will help unless drivers realize that passengers are in no great hurry to reach their destinations

Really very sad to note this accident. Yet again we lost (or almost lost) a young life due to sheer negligence either by the driver or the driver was forced due to the situation at the very Gurpur area.
We have witnessed so many accidents at that area in and around Gurpur, which is indeed very narrow and busy most of the times. It is really very difficult for the drivers to drive safely at that narrow road and have seen so many vehicles parked either side of the road in front of the restaurants, temples, mosques and school!
This is the right time for the authorities to take necessary action but immediately. They should not wait until the locals residence or the temple & mosque authorities to give the land for widening the roads!
Let’s hope for better infrastructure and better life for all.

Widening the roads is not the solution for the problem. Problem here is the reckless driving and police and the RTO not taking proper action.(I know its beyond them for some extend) Widening the road will only encourage faster driving and imagine the kids crossing these roads. Only thing is the young child lost its life for nothing. I am pretty sure the killer driver will start driving(or may be driving) immediately. He will just worry about his own kids. No empathy not courtesy towards anything and others kids. As long as our governments do not enforce the law there is no hope. Poor boy looses his life probably on his first day of school. He must have dreamed about this day as he is going to first standard for the first time. I don't know why he was not accompanied by some senior? Please guys don't let children go out by their own. Maniacs are there everywhere. I am pretty sure lot of people who did the protest themselves do not know the basic road manners. When something happens to us we wake up. That's very sad.

Now, the protesters should discuss mutually, convince the temple-goers to budge from their adamant protest and shift the temple to make way for widening the road.

At the same time, the other community too be wise and decide on shifting the mosque - they too don't want a member from their community suffer as Rohit did - do they ?

No use of blaming the driver, gurpur roads are in such a pathetic condition. So narrow roads waht to expect from it.

If mosque and temple does not provide land to widen the road, the ultimate solution is make a flyover and setup a toll gate. It will also reduce the distance.

those days are gone dear, explaining, requesting... now it's time for locals to take action. Because one or two such drivers punished on the spot, then automatically these drivers will learn to drive safe. There are thousands of vehicles driven on this road. Not everybody get in to accident and kill innocents. Few drivers who drive rash irrespective of the road condition will end up in such disasters. I am telling you drivers who end up in such accidents always will have excuses, if NH, they say road consition is bad with diversions. If it's narrow road they blame the road. If it's bus, then bus drivers telling owners force them to drive fast to maintain timings... what mistake of ours ( now the kid ) we need to suffer ? IF all drivers unanimously decide what ever be the reason, they will drive safe, then I agree with you. But it's not the case. I am seeing daily, the way these tippers, trucks, pick up vans, private buses... my god. they are acting as if they are sent by Yama to kill the people who ever comes on their way. That's why I told driver need to be burnt on the spot... 2 / 3 such incidents will make the drive rto think , instead of balming others. because he is going to pay for his mistake , not his bus owner or authorities...

very sad to read another incident. another victim for our helplessness and corruption. Even I read many times on accidents in this road and locals always stress for the road widening. Unfortunate that authorities have nice excuses and keep aside the need. It's a need , not a luxury yaar. What future we are giving to our young ones. not even the right to live their life. very very unfortunate. Yes, MLAs and MPs need to visit the place and ensure immediate action is taken. please don't give any promises. we are fed up of such promises. please act and show you are real leaders. or else one day either your kids or loved ones will die in similar accidents or one of the family member of the victim will kill your family to show how it hurts. I am telling you. I don't know how the mother might have felt by seeing her own son dying in front of her , just because of a reckless ness driving of a driver. he is a social evil and please arrest and eliminate him from the society. I hope, this driver will be caught hold by locals and burnt in the same spot.
