Over three lakh offenders jump signals every year in Mumbai

Mumbai, June 4 (Mid-Day): If figures of traffic police are to be believed, out of the 12 lakh road accident deaths that occur worldwide, almost 1.5 lakh are in India. The island city too has a bad record, with 700 deaths and 3,000 people injured on an average every year, highlighting the utter disregard towards following traffic rules.

In case of Gopinath Munde’s accident as well, the incident that occurred early morning, the driver of the other vehicle allegedly jumped the signal and ended up hitting his car at 90 degree with Munde’s vehicle.

One can observe the clear-cut disregard for following traffic rules by simply standing at a junction during rush hours. Four- and two-wheelers barely slow down before zebra crossing, bikers often check if the traffic cop is paying attention or not and decide to make a dash at red lights without a second thought, while motorists start their engines and accelerate even before pedestrians have managed to cross the road.

Transport experts agree that for most motorists, there is no fear of law.

“There is a need for discipline when it comes to driving. The new government should ensure that such behaviour is not acceptable and they should increase fines and make laws more stringent,” said Ashok Datar, transport expert, Mumbai Environmental Social Network.

Sources at Mumbai Traffic Police said that while they try to post cops at as many junctions as possible, with the total strength of around 3,000, it is difficult to cover every junction.

Dr B Upadhyay, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said, “The proposal to increase fines is still pending with the Central government. Over the last few days, we have caught as many as 6,000 motorists breaching traffic rules.”

I clearly agree. Unless there is a strict rule in place our people doesn't mind break the rule. Let that fine be huge one that they can not pay and face custody. Not the 100 rs 200 rs which they will throw on traffic police's face and say fuck off. Really. So, let there be strict rules, as Eulalia Dsouza mentioned like, suspension of the DL, arrest if major accident or fatal accidents... As of now nothing I see. Accident happens next day the same driver will be driving. Above that he will be on the same speed and same style because he knows nothing will happen to him. this mentality should go and then things will automatically change.

Thank you Daijiworld for this article with statistics. Though many more such incidents would go un-noticed and un-accounted as well.
My concern is : if we Indians go abroad on a Tour to either Singapore or London ( just examples ) we follow traffic rules there, we do not litter papers on streets, we do not jump signals, we do not change traffic lanes, we do not overtake from wrong side.! why because we are fined heavily there. If it is in USA, our DL gets negative points if got caught offending traffic rules. Singapore throwing a piece of paper in public, fine of SIN Dollars 500/.
But back home in India we dont really care a damn on any of these rules, why because we know we can very well get away with them. Our DL is safe, how many ever accidents we have met with, few death cases may be. How many times I would jump signal, drive rashly, what ever offence it could be, but I know I can be free.
The day our Govt gets down with tougher rules, like any of mentioned - say suspend DL for 03 months , 03 months, 12 months, then for 03 years etc. I am sure our Indian Drivers (including me.!) will be careful. Come on authorities wake up, it doesnt need a VIP like Mr. Munde to loose life to implement these tough rules to save lives. Ironical, even in this case look at the Indica driver who is out on bail already & here we have lost a tall Political Leader.!!
