Mumbai, Jun 3 (Mid-day) : A 24-year-old man is behind bars after trying to abduct a woman who didn’t return his affections, with the intention of forcibly marrying her. According to the police, the complainant and the accused are residents of the same area, and knew each other well.
The accused, identified as Nikhil Keni, had professed his love for her, but she had not reciprocated his feelings. Unable to accept the rejection, he planned to abduct her and then forcibly marry her. The woman, however, managed to escape, and called her father.
While Keni escaped, he surrendered a day later, on Sunday. He has been arrested under 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 363 (kidnapping) of the IPC. He was produced in court on Sunday and remanded in police custody.
On Friday evening, when the woman alighted from a train at Khar station, Keni met her and asked her to accompany him for some important work. By the time they had walked to the other side of the station, Keni apprised her of his plan to marry her by force. Frightened, the woman hatched a desperate plot for escape, and told Keni that she needed to visit a restroom to relieve herself. She managed to escape from the public toilet.
Having waited for long, Keni realised she had escaped and headed to Khar (East) where both reside. On his way, he found her running. Grabbing her with force, he tried to drag her away. By this time, a crowd had gathered to watch the drama unfold, and the complainant’s father had also reached the spot.
He asked Keni to leave, threatening to call the police, otherwise. Keni started arguing with the woman’s father, pushing him, but scared by the growing crowd, fled. The woman and her father then proceeded to the police station to lodge a case against Keni.
