Bangalore faces garbage crisis after residents around landfill protest

Bangalore, Jun 3 (DHNS): Garbage crisis loomed large on the City on Monday as more than 400 truckloads of waste could not be dumped at the Mandur landfill, in a strong reminiscence of the 2012 scenario.

The situation is also a stark reminder of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s promise, made soon after he assumed office, to solve the garbage problem within six months.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) could not dump waste on Sunday due to an agitation by the residents of 20 villages around Mandur landfill site. The residents protested against the BBMP’s failure to fulfill its promise of closing the landfill in one year.

The agitation in Mandur had its effect on the City within a day as streets wore a messy look. Heaps of garbage were seen or set on fire at many places, especially in Rajajinagar, Kamakashipalya, Magadi Road and Basaveshwaranagar among others. Sujatha A, a resident of Nagavara, maintained that the garbage from her neighbourhood was not cleared.

Markets, too, were not spared from the stinking problem. At the K R Market, traders said more than 20 tonnes of waste has remained uncleared since Sunday.

“The situation is worsening as the waste was not picked up for the last two days,” said president of K R Market Flower Merchants’ Association G M Diwakar.

General Secretary of Russell Market Traders’ Association Mohammed Idris Chowdhary said, “Around 30 tonnes of waste was piled up and Monday’s rainfall has worsened the situation as the garbage has started stinking badly.”

When contacted, Mayor B S Satyanarayana was in denial mode. He said steps were being taken to remove the waste from all the Palike wards.

A local leader from Mandur, Chandrashekar said, “In 2012, the BBMP had sought one year’s time. After the completion of a year, it sought an extension of six months to set up solid waste-processing units, to which we obliged. The deadline also ended six months ago, but there has been no effort from the BBMP to stop the dumping.” Chandrashekar added that the agitation would continue despite the deployment of police forces.

I have been staying in Bangalore for the last 6 years . When BJP ruled the state we saw garbage everywhere . After Congress came to power they stated that the issue will be solved but I still see that it is still not solved . Instead of solving these issues first by the Congress Chief Minister after coming to power they have first promoted Annya Bhaghya, Shadi Baghya etc but did not bother to find a solution to the garbage issue . Thousands of plastic bags below 40 micron are used every day and thrown after single use . These plastics itself can be reduced to a such a extent , that it will bring down the garbage quantity .

Secondly, all the waste food and waste vegetables can been used in Bio gas, Bio manure etc in addition also create power through proper technology .
The main issue here is BBMP does not want to have these alternatives because the BBMP Contractors will loose their contracts . Also , we have been hearing from last one year that 4 Solid waste management plants will come up but nothing is seen so far nor there is an improvement in garbage collection .Thanks to BBMP for turning Garden City into Garbage City . Silicon valley Rocks!

Not short term but a regular and permanent solution is necessary to treat and manage the garbage. It needs to be sorted, diverted and controlled at the point of its generation itself, being it is a continuous supply of disposals.
It has to be managed and handled at the primary levels only, so that disturbing environmental mess can be averted.
All lessons cannot be taught in schools and colleges, but they have to be learnt by common sense, experience and basic understanding.
Being it is a free and abundant source of raw materials the scope is to establish collection centres to accept sorted garbage in 10 to 12 categories, where it is can be productively and efficiently utilized.
It can be considered as an opportunity to reuse, recycle, reproduce, recreate and revalue.
The option is of job creation, efficient utilization and to have a clean environment.

Dear All DW readers & commentators,
Garbage crises started in Bangalore when BJP was in Power. But present state Govt. has been going on promising to solve the problem. Most of the people who r controlling BBMP r belonging to BJP. BBMP in Bangalore siphoned of RS.1,500/- crores of rupees when BJP was on power. Friends I have been going on commenting that either Congress, BJP or JD[s], they r not going to solve our problems. Most of the staff, Corporators & contractors in BBMP r corrupt. All these Government, & Corporations already turned our beautiful Garden city into a Garden City. The purpose of all these corrupt netas is to loot our Country to the maximum extent.

Nonsense ! BBMP and garbage crisis has been around ever since Bangalore started expanding in the 90s. None of the governments or the corporators have every tried to plan and handle the waste management in a scientific way. To blame BJP government for Bangalore's problems when 60 out of 65 years were ruled by Congress or Janata is preposterous!

    Dear Mathew, Nette,

Thanks for your comment & clarification. U may be right that Garbage crises started from 1990 onwards. But I settled down in Bangalore in the year 2009 onwards after I retired from Abu Dhabi, when BJP came to power. I used to visit Bangalore before 1974 & staying with my Uncle a Jesuit priest living in Jesuit Newas. I have noticed at that time how beautiful our Bangalore city was. My earlier comment was not meant for to blame BJP only. All most all our politicians pertaining to all parties r corrupt. But some blind commentators r supporting these politicians who became multi crorepathis, pocketing the most of funds meant for development & for social welfare. The result is in front of all of us as our roads r full of potholes. Garbage is thrown all over India. Foot paths, highway, bridges r broken.

Can anyone think of a medium term and long term solution to this menace of garbage disposal.
Solution (Option 1): Incineration of garbage may be a solution but evolution of toxic fumes may be a problems.
Solution (Option 2): Dumping and burying deep in the strata may be a second option, but contamination of water table may have to be taken care.
Suggestion: Above ALL the problems and a solution to disposal of garbage should be addressed by a Feasibility Study in compliance with Environment.

What are the international standards and practices followed.

Although we would be tempted to take yet another pot shot at Siddu our residents of Bangalore are also partly to blame. Our attitude towards garbage has to improve. Our imagination on garbage is limited to vacant area in the neighbouring compound and it is not seriously on anybody's agenda. We do not think as to what is the point in having a clean and salubrious house in a garbage city. When people with this attitude are entrusted with responsibility of garbage clearance of the whole city..this is what happens. And ofcourse money, profiteering, majority in Vidhan Soudha versus BBMP is also to be taken care off. When they all mix we arrive at Garbage city.

    @vivian, Dubai
That means Bangalore city is separated from BBMP ie.separate entity.Who is ruling the Bangalore Siddu or BBMP?Whether it is ruled by BBMP or Congress,it is the duty of head of the state to warn them.Does Siddu scared of BBMP officials?.See Mr.Vivian,I am not belonging or supporting any political party. My question is when Congress is ruling the state,it is the responsibility of the government to take the stock of the situations prevailing in the city.Only because of political differences, residents should not be targeted or punished or put in trouble/problem.This is the collective duty of both BBMP and the ruling government. Are the citizens of the city not paying tax? They will pay the tax to the government not to BBMP.Now who is at fault? Govt or BBMP.If you are the supporter of congress,I am very sorry for my comments. This is the fact what I have aired because I am also a part of so called Karnataka.I withdraw my comments here itself let BBMP,ruled by BJP find the suitable solution for the problems and Siddu will make one more point in his development agenda or you go and help him to solve the problems.Let the citizens
die,no problem.we will write here from far.It is always easier said than done Mr.Vivian.Good that you have commented against my opinion.Keep it up.God bless you.rgds

Dinesh BBMP is in the hands of BJP they are only swindling money they are now celebrating the success at the Centre they are not bothered about the people and just putting the blame on the ministers in bangalore. If they cannot do anything they have to resign and let the congress govt take the municipality.

As things cannot be created or destroyed but only can be altered, why the garbage cannot be converted into valuable materials and products, by sorting, grouping and reproducing?
Are they not the same items which were displayed and presented with decoration and attraction, to sell at high rates?
Is it not the stink and lost form and shape only make them to be called and considered as garbage?
Is it not an availability of essential raw materials (abundant and for free), which needs only sorting?
Are they not the raw materials of different types of products which are really valuable and costly?
Is there no way they can be sorted, grouped, recycled, reproduced and reused to get right value?
Why they need to be dumped by occupying and allowing a vast area to be polluted with chemical mix?
We have plenty of talented academics, expert technicians and advanced technology, but the need is to identify, recognize and grab the opportunity to convert the garbage into a valuable treasure.
Being the poison is used as treatment for ailments, why the garbage cannot be given a new life with proper treatment?
The exact sorting has to be started from the original place of garbage release and collection centres to be established for distribution purposes to cater various customers or producing units.
If mineral mined, oil and gas explored at cost and effort, why not readily available raw materials cannot be sorted, grouped, recycled, reproduced and reused with revaluation?
No leader can clean the public dirt but creating value to dirt can be a boon to the environment.

In fact they (cong)have forgot to mention in the earlier list of developments in one year of congress rule. This is one of the biggest developments by the congress government in one year.Great achievement by Peddaramayya's government.Government could have spent the amount of advertisement for this noble cause in the best interest of Bangaloreans/residents.Which they do not do coz with this they cannot highlight their achievements. This is like "HORAGE BASAPPA,VOLAGE VISHAPPA".This pile of garbage can be put on auction, which can fetch some revenue for the government.Keep it up.Hamaara Karnataka,Mahan Hai,Niddheramaia phailwan hai.Sadhaa sukhi raho.Janthako maaro goli.Hamaara Neta Siddaramaia lekhin log kahte hai unko Niddheramaia.
