Puttur, Jun 2: Three persons died and around 10 others were injured in an accident on Shiradi Ghat here on Monday June 2.
The deceased have been identified as Tippeswami (30), Shwetha (26) and Shwetha’s one-and-a-half-year-old son Ganesh. All three died on the spot.
The accident occured when a gas tanker rammed into Force Trax Toofan.
Ganesh was sitting on his mother’s lap when the accident took place. It is learnt that Shwetha’s husband Manjunath escaped unhurt. There were nine adults and eight children in the Toofan, all from Davangere.
Altogether about 13 people were injured in the accident.
Manjunath’s mother Lalithamma (55), sister Latha (30), brother-in-law Karibasappa (45), his children Dashan (13), Madhu (11), sister Veena (36), her children Reshma (12), Jagadeesh (10), sister-in-law Annapoorna (30), her children Chandan (6), Shivu (5), Meghana (3) and brother Manavantha (25) were injured. Among them, three are said to be serious.
They were rushed to hospitals in Mangalore by 108 ambulance and other private ambulances. The bodies were shifted to Puttur government hospital with the help of private ambulances from Uppinangady and Nelyady.
Even though there is a sharp turn at the spot, no such accidents have been reported there so far. The vehicular traffic at the spot was badly hit for about half an hour.
The driver of the tanker escaped from the scene. A case has been registered in the Puttur traffic police station.
The family of 17 members from Naganoor in Davangere district were on a pilgrimage to Dharmasthala, Subrahmanya and udupi. They left Davangere on Sunday June 1 via a private operated tourist vehicle. After visiting Dharmasthala and Subrahmanya, they were on their way to Udupi on the NH via Gundya, explained Manjunath who was unhurt in the accident.
Failed attempt to avert the accident: Noticing the gas tanker coming from the opposite direction, the Toofan driver tried his best to avert the accident. He had almost moved off the road towards the extreme edge on the left. However, his attempts failed as the tanker hit the Toofan head-on.
