Kasargod, Jun 1: In a tragic incident that brought to fore the havoc wreaked by endosulfan on human life, parents of a nine-year-old boy allegedly committed suicide after killing their son in a private hospital in Kanhangad here on Sunday June 1.

The deceased have been identified as Thamban (50), a resident of Cheruvathur, his wife Padmini (42) and their son Karthik (9).

It is said that Karthik, who was a victim of endosulfan, had been admitted to the hospital on Friday May 30, and was supposed to get discharged on Sunday. However, when a nurse came to his room, she found it locked from the inside. When there was no response even after repeated knocks, the nurse alerted the other staff.

On breaking open the door, the hospital staff found Thamban, Padmini and Karthik hanging. Karthik was found to be gagged and tied from the window grill and it is suspected that the parents killed him before ending their own lives.

Thamban and Padmini had earlier lost two other children to endosulfan, and it is said that they were depressed by the fact that their third child too had become its victim. In 2009, they had attended a camp for endosulfan victims and though they had identity cards, they had not received sufficient compensation or relief package from the government despite being eligible. Moreover, Thamban being a mason at a construction site was not financially sound.

DC Mohammed Sagir has directed Kanhangad DSP to investigate the case. A human rights group has sought a report on the incident from the DC and the police.

Kanhangad police have registered a case.

For all the problems in Tulunadu such as endosulfan, lack of development, lack of job opportunities, TuluNadu people themselves are responsible as an opportunity to be a separate TuluNadu state during independence. Both Kerala and Karnataka are taking TuluNadu for a ride.

Today it is Mr.Thamban tomorrow might be Thanvir or some one else. All this because of poor and culprit leadership government. It is the duty of the govt to conduct a proper lab test. With out any precaution govt playing with human life is unfair. All should stand together and protest and demand a fair compensation to all effected family. Either it will be continued by corrupted politicians.

What a tragedy ! Even in our place too there is hundreds of family suffering from this evil endosulfan (Alangar n surrounding places coming in between Kadaba n Uppinangady)in Puttur Taluk.

When D V S was C M of Karnataka,he promised to take necessary action for their rehabilitation/treatment/compensation etc but did nothing.

Its after Mr.U T.Khadar became health minister he did his best effort to console them by all means but I think it is still needed more concentration on them or else tragedy like Kasaragod may occur here too.

Its really tragic... however, it is banned in Karnataka as per this Wikipedia report, please check

The para which refers to Karnataka says this - Karnataka government also banned the use of endosulfan with immediate effect. Briefing presspersons after the State Cabinet meeting, Minister for Higher Education V.S. Acharya said the Cabinet discussed the harmful effects of endosulfan on the health of farmers and people living in rural areas. The government will now invoke the provisions of the Insecticides Act, 1968 (a Central act) and write a letter to the Union Government about the ban. Minister for Energy, and Food and Civil Supplies Shobha Karandlaje, who has been spearheading a movement seeking a ban on endosulfan, said, "I am grateful to Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and members of the Cabinet for approving the ban.[64]

Rajendra Singh Rana has written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding the withdrawal of the National Institute of Occupational Health (NIOH) study on Endosulfan titled "Report Of The Investigation Of Unusual Illness" allegedly produced by the Endosulfan exposure in Padre village of Kasargod district in north Kerala. In his statement Mr. Rana said "The NIOH report is flawed. I'm in complete agreement with what the workers have to say on this. In fact, I have already made representation to the Prime Minister and concerned Union Ministers of health and environment demanding immediate withdrawal of the report," as reported by The Economic Times and Outlook India [65][66]
