Udupi: Three orphan siblings struggle to pay off father’s debts

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi

Udupi, May 28: The suicide of Gilbert Varghese, a resident of Thottam, Udupi, has come as a cruel blow of fate to his three children, who were yet to come to terms with the tragic death of their mother.

This is the heart-rending tale of the three children of Gilbert and Patricia Varghese, belonging to St Anne Church, Thottam. The eldest, Flevina Varghese (18), is a student of commerce in Milagres College while Melvin Varghese (16) attends pre-university college, and the youngest, Florina Varghese (9), is in the fourth standard.

Since 2004, the family has not seen happy times. Patricia, during her third pregnancy, was diagnosed with cancer. Gilbert, a daily labourer, who works at the fish harbour, had to spend all his savings to look after his sick wife. But she succumbed to the disease in 2007, leaving the three children under the care of Gilbert.

It was also a time when Gilbert had just started to renovate the house. He had obtained a loan of Rs 7 lac by mortgaging his land. However, it proved a costly move. The uncertain hours of work did not fetch the desired income. Meanwhile, he had spent heavily on the treatment and care of his wife. The debt doubled and he subsequently failed to repay the bank on time.

When Gilbert could not manage the financial constraints, he took the extreme step of committing suicide, leaving his children orphans.

With this, the three orphans are left with a heavy financial burden and no family. “As of now, our relatives have been helping us with our daily expenses. My aunt, who is in Mumbai, looks after my youngest sister. My brother and I live with our grandmother. We are helpless. We cannot repay the loan taken by our father,” she said.

The parish priest of St Anne Church, Thottam, in a letter to Daijiworld, said, “I strongly recommend the family be considered for generous help. They are poor but good, God-fearing, and service-minded. I appeal to donors to generously contribute for the children’s education, day-to-day expenses, and to enable them to clear their loans.”

Individuals, philanthropists and organizations are requested to help the youngsters in any way they can to enable the three youngsters live with dignity and look forward to a brighter future.

Those who wish to help them may send your contributions to the bank account mentioned below. Please note that it is a joint account in the names of Flevina and Melvin, and the name of the youngest sibling Florina, who is in Mumbai, will be added to the account soon.

    really they deserve sympathy monitory.
as told by Clifford/DR.Earl/others....this fly. is poorer than `poorest of poor` since priest endorse help request.
instead church adding one more surcharge, they must classify their income(donation/..)into 1/1.5% cess as in service tax
break up & disburse the same instead setting a new trend in society may be having negative impact in society over longer period of time.

The situation what the children are undergoing rigth now is so painful. I am sure response will be positive from well wishers and daijiworld.com followers. My personal contribution certainly will follow to their account. However I would like to add, we have been contributing a lot from Gulf to construct church, schools, colleges, community halls, etc and thereafter though returns out of these units is sizable, yet not not known us. I would recommend all Church leaders must create a fund out of its income to assist this type of distressed family and children of such family must be taken in confidence to create good Christine family.

Insurance is given to the other types of loans viz, personal loan, education loan. This is a mortgage loan as mentioned in the article. So bank has right to seize and auction the property that has been mortgaged in case of default in paying the debt.

The beauty of this appeal is, account is opened in the name of children jointly (One name to be added, as per article). Normally in other cases, accounts are opened jointly with parish priest. Such system should be stopped, and benifit should go directly to the family in need. I appreciate daijiworld in this regards. I am not rich man, but sending Rs 1000.

Banks reaps on the sweat of the masses. Then why they don't have humanity side, they can allocate some budget for the welfare of the community either by write-off or by charity. Banks should also have social responsibility!

When you are in debts, all things go wrong, banks will not have mercy at all, they only come with big offers but with low interest, but their loans wow high interest. Friends this is true. This is what happen to Gilbert, poor man did not have any other option. By God grace we all should come forward and help these orphan children to come out of this crises.

    GOD BLESS DAIJIWORLD ALWAYS.

Yes, banks will not simply show mercy, because loan was taken on certain terms and conditions, it is commercial aspect. Though if we discuss with the manager, certain concession at least in the interest will be given, if we pay lump sum amount.
Of course I have feelings and soft corner to the family, pray for them and also help them.

A very sorry state of affairs which our community has to deeply introspect. This shows of some failure on the part of our community where we boast of sharing and caring. The BCC (basic Christian community) model has failed in the given case. Who could be held accountable in this case- the poverty, unemployment, no support of community or the system at large or the fate which we usually blame.

I agree with you Mr. Joseph, there are many families in need in our community but most of them out of self respect, they will never beg and leave it to their fate. It is high time, the concept of sharing 1% of income to BCC is important and should be followed strictly in all parishes and reimbursed accordingly to medical, education or any other basic need. In this case our community is a failure, where we could not help the children in not becoming orphans. It is harsh but true our community members can never see other member getting elevated and try to pull him down, We are unlike the gujaratis, parsis, sikhs and keralites who go out of their way and help their community people a The work which BCC should do, I feel Daiji is doing.
