Rains bring temperature down, but derail normal life

Bangalore, May 28 (DHNS) : Rains brought relief from the summer heat across the State on Tuesday. However, they caused havoc in many places in the State.  



In Gulbarga

Rains accompanied by hailstorm, gusty winds and lightning lashed Gulbarga city and surrounding areas on Tuesday. Chandrakant Huggi of Brahmapur area died and five others were injured as lightning struck them when they were standing under a tree near the Sharanabasaveshwara temple in the city.  Gulbarga city recorded about 2 cm of rain. The showers brought relief from the summer heat as the day temperature was hovering around 43 degree celsius in the city in the last three days.  

Powerlines snap in Yadgir

Moderate rains lashed Yadgir district, bringing down several trees and electricity poles. As a result, power supply was disrupted for nearly three hours. Kembhavi town received rain for nearly an hour.

One killed in Bagalkot Nagappa Banni, 35, was struck dead by lightning at Bennur village in Bagalkot taluk on Monday night. Banni, who hails from Yelburga taluk in Koppal district, was working as a road construction worker. 

Six people suffered injuries, two of them seriously, when lightning struck them on Gurlakatti Road on the outskirts of Nargund in Gadag district.  There were heavy rains in Bijapur city and its surrounding areas, while hailstorm lashed Chadachan area. Two persons were killed due to lightning in Indi taluk. 

In Dharwad district

Rains lashed Dharwad district, including the twin cities of Hubli-Dharwad, on Tuesday for nearly an hour from 8 am.

Youth killed 

Chiranth, 18, son of Ramesh from Arakere in Srirangapatna taluk of Mandya district, was struck dead by lightning when he was playing cricket with his friends at the government polytechnic in the village on Tuesday evening.

 Six persons were injured in Periyapatna while several trees were uprooted in Kollegal and surrounding areas, in Chamarajanagar district.
