Mangalore, May 27: "Serving people of a particular religion and caste does not help in the inclusive growth of a society. Social work becomes meaningful only when we work for the betterment of all without taking into consideration to which religion or caste one belongs to," said Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza, bishop of Mangalore.
Addressing the youth at 'Parzol 2014', a cultural competition hosted by Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) at Moodbidri on Sunday May 25, the Bishop highlighted on one's duty to serve all. "Along with the bringing the youth together, the ICYM has to reach out to the people of all religions with the message of Christ, who served without expecting," he said.
Former minister Amarnath Shetty was the chief guest. "Communal harmony must prevail in society. The priests and service oriented associations like ICYM have to also work for uniting people of different religions."
ICYM website was launched and annual magazine 'Gulob' was released on the occasion. The programme was also a witness to felicitations to people who worked for society and in recognition of their achievements. Moodbidri town municipal vice-president Eliza Menezes, Belvai gram panchayat member Anish D'Souza, Moodbidri MCC Bank director Andrew D'Souza, and MCS Bank director Goerge Monis were honoured by the dignitaries.
Five students received Rs 5,000 each as scholarships. Santhosh of Belvai, a differentl-abled student was given a wheelchair.
Fr Austin Peter Peris, parish priest of Moodbidri Church, Fr Ronald D'Souza, ICYM director Fr Assisi Rebello and entrepreneur Walter Stephen Mendis were present on the dais.
ICYM president Selvin Jude Colaco welcomed, while secretery Rayan D'Souza proposed the vote of thanks. Rajesh Vamadapadavu compered the programme.
There was a comedy show presented by Prashamsa Team, Kaup. Explosive Team, Bangalore presented a dance performance.
