Mangalore, May 27: Serial thieves struck five houses in Konaje on the intervening night between Monday May 26 and Tuesday May 27 and got away with over Rs 10 lac worth gold ornaments from one house and cash from others.
The thieves broke into the house of Victor D'Souza through the backdoor when the family was asleep. There were about five persons in the house including Victor D'Souza and his wife Severine.
It is said that the thieves broke open four cupboards and looted gold ornaments worth Rs 10 lac. The family members claimed that the thieves used chloroform on them and hence they were unaware of the theft until morning.
The thieves also tried breaking into the house of Ayub in the same neighbourhood, but did not take away anything. Similarly, they broke the lock the on the house of Ibrahim, but failed in their attempt to loot.
The thieves then broke into the houses of Abdulla and Latif and stole Rs 4,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively.
Konaje police led by SI Gopalkrishna arrived at the spot along with canine squads and fingerprint experts.
A case has been registered in Konaje police station and further investigations are on.
The locals, on hearing news of the thefts, lamented that though such thefts have occured several times in the past in Konaje area, the police have failed to arrest the culprits.
