Mers disease: Gulf passengers to be screened at Mangalore airport

Bangalore, May 23 (PTI): Karnataka Government will set up surveillance teams at Bangalore International Airport and Mangalore Airport to conduct test on passengers arriving from the Middle East, where Mers Coronavirus has created panic in those countries, Health Minister U T Khader said.

"As per the advisory of the Central Government, the government will set up surveillance teams at the Kempegowda International Airport and Mangalore Airport to conduct test on passengers arriving from the Middle East...," he told reporters here.

The decision also comes in the wake of reports that the disease is spreading in Karnataka as a large number of people from Middle East countries arrive through Bangalore and Mangalore airports, Khader said.

The minister also said the disease is similar to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). Hence, passengers from those countries should be screened.

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), a viral respiratory illness that first surfaced in Saudi Arabia in April 2012, is caused by a coronavirus called MERS-CoV. The disease is referred to as Coronaviruses as they have crown-like projections on their surfaces. "Corona" in Latin means "crown" or "halo".

Recently, it has been confirmed that Arabian camel is the origin of the infectious disease.

Talking about H1N1 disease, Khader said the health department had stepped up surveillance and awareness measures as the number of influenza cases were on the rise.

So far eight deaths due to swine flu have been reported since January this year, he said, adding, "Three deaths were reported this month."

Good idea, but is it practically possible to screen such a big movement of people for a newly started viral infection???

Sprucing up one's immune system is the one and only remedy and cure for any disease and especially for such virulent outbreaks!!

Ironically, I remember during the outbreak of "bird flu" the economically backward and poor fearlessly feasted on dead chicken when the general populace was in a state of shock and anxiety!!

MEDICAL SCIENCE DOES NOT KNOW EVEN 10% OF HOW THE COMPLEX BODY FUNCTIONS and does not lay any emphasis on building the immune system rather prescribing costly and dangerous chemical drugs and treatments!! Jai Hind!!

MERS is in a class of diseases caused by coronaviruses, which spur respiratory infections. Severe acute respiratory syndrome, another coronavirus, infected 8,098 people during a 2003 outbreak in two dozen countries. By the time SARS disappeared, 774 people had died. MERS, first reported in Saudi Arabia in 2012, appears deadlier. Long found in bats and camels, the virus has been reported in humans throughout the Middle East and across much of Europe. So far, about 30 percent of those infected have died. Thus far, human-to-human transmission appears to occur only when people are in close contact. Some medical personnel have contracted the disease, and disease clusters have been reported in other countries. There is much officials don't know. The sudden increase in cases worldwide, some health officials worry, could mean MERS has mutated. It could also simply mean doctors are more aware.

    Best regards
