Mangalore, May 22: The Thokkottu junction on national highway 66 was choked with traffic on Thursday May 22 as the road has been dug up for laying a drain as part of the highway work. Several people, especially office-goers and students, had to face much inconvenience.
Initially, due to traffic problems, the work on the highway was put on hold and a new two-way road was constructed. There was rush only during morning and evening hours, while during the day the traffic was normal.
On Wednesday May 21 night, for the construction of drain the road was dug up and then filled with mud. But when it started to rain, as the vehicles passed on the mud, another pit got formed and as a consequence, which resulted in traffic chaos. There was heavy traffic during the morning hours, with a gridlock that extended up to two kilometers. Commuters were stuck for hours together as traffic moved at a snail's pace.
Meanwhile, a city bus, in a bid to avoid the traffic jam, rammed into a shop while trying to steer through a narrow one-way road. As a consequence, passengers in the bus were injured, and other vehicles too got stuck in the narrow road.
The bus driver who was responsible for the incident managed to escape from the spot. The roof tiles of a massage center belonging to one John were damaged in the incident.
After much effort, Ullal police and home guards managed to clear the traffic by afternoon.
