Bantwal: Police jeep hits taxi, kills woman at Thumbay

Daijiworld Media Network - Bantwal

Bantwal, May 19: In a tragic accident, Philomena Coelho (42), an active social worker, was killed at Ramalkatte in Thumbay when a police jeep which hit the taxi she was about to board ran over her on Saturday at around 3.15 pm.

Philomena who boarded the taxi from Thumbay was on her way to Modankap church along with her 11 year old daughter to attend mass on Saturday evening. She was admitted to Fr Muller Hospital at Modankap but was declared brought dead.

The shared taxi in which Philomena was travelling had stopped at Ramalkatte to enable other passengers to get down. Philomena had come out of the taxi to make way for other passengers travelling in the taxi.

When she was about to get into the taxi after the passengers had alighted a police jeep hit the taxi from behind. Due to the impact the taxi moved forward throwing Philomena on the ground and the jeep ran over her.

Philomena was a member of the parish council and was also active in Sthree Shakti Groups. She was also the leader of the ward in the parish.

She is survived by her husband who is working in the Gulf and two children, boy who recently completed his SSLC and girl who is now studying in 6th. Her funeral will be held at Infant Jesus Church in Madankap on Wednesday at 3.30 pm.

Bantwal police have registered a case.

Really sorry to read this sad incident about my relative Phullu. Proper investigation has to be done, I believe its 100% reckless driving by the police jeep driver.
The person who was driving must be suspended for a lengthy period and his driving license also must be cancelled for ever. Right compensation has to be awarded to Philomena's children. May her soul rest in eternal peace. I really do not understand what kind of people are existing, they just pose and keep smiling on any moment...just no value of human life.

Accidents can happen from anybody. One should learn proper driving & traffic rules which are not there in all over india. They are not at all litterated how best & safe to make use of the road while driving. Slow track driver (mostly tankers, trucks, trailors, tempo, busses & ALSO two wheelers) driving in fast track & the person in fast track he has to wait to get his way front & ultimately he has forced to overtake by hook or crook. Installing 4 to 6 big beam lights are common in india for night drivers. No one bothered. Also they are installed in such a angle, so that the opposite person some time usably forced to stop his vehicle. Most of all every thing is common & easy in india. Only sad thing in india, if any VIP person dies, rest all things are common.

MAY HER SOUL REST IN PEACE.

    Rest In Peace,
May God grant strength & courage for the entire family at the untimely demise of their beloved.
But surprising fact is why this tragic news took 2 days time for all the main medias to publish?
Is there something to cover up by the very authorities who need to maintain law & order being the culprits in this case?

Very sad. May her soul rest in peace.
Govt have to give Rs.10 Lakhs for her children as a compensation. It is better to stop the Private Taxi service and put more Govt buses in this route. I know these Taxis old Ambassador cars and carrying more than 10 passengers in one car which is very dangerous. Public have to stop this.

The photograph shows this is just another routine for all the by-lookers. Even the policeman is posing happily. The real pain is felt only by the family members. Until there are no stiff penalties for the drivers, accidents like this will never ever stop in our Mangalore

not sure whose fault. Some times these shared taxis stop all of sudden on the NH, just like that either to pick up or to make passengers get down. May this be the cause or the police jeep was in such a speed that it went out of control seeing this jeep stopping all of sudden ... ? What ever it is, such a valuable life is gone. Really pity on the family and RIP

By the report it looks like not the case of sudden stopping. The taxi stopped, she got down to let others to get down, others got down and then she was about to get in again when the jeep stuck from no where. It is not clear from the report why jeep stuck a already stopped taxi. Now a days these accidents started creating suspicion about the cause of the accident! May her soul RIP.

In report it is very clear that there was plenty of time and taxi stopped long ago and it has already boarded other passengers. When Philomena was about to board it hit her. All I can say is reckless driving.
