Bantwal, May 18: In a major development in the rape case of a minor by married men, the police on Saturday May 17 succeeded in tracing and arresting the accused Bobbekeri Basheer and Radhukatte Basheer in Gujarat.
The city crime branch under the directions of SP Dr Sharanappa and a special police team arrested the two accused at Okha in Gujarat after conducting investigations there, it is learnt.
Radhukatte Basheer of Padnoor, Vittal and Bakuta Basheer from Bobbekeri of Vittal Kasba had been absconding ever since a complaint was filed against them. The police received credible information that they were hiding in Gujarat and thus the police teams left for Gujarat and nabbed them.
In April this year, the 14-year-old girl in Idkidu was taken away by Radhukatte Basheer and Bakuta Basheer to Madikeri and allegedly raped her repeatedly for three days. Their friend Jabbar, who came to know of the incident, reportedly took advantage of her and threatened to pour acid and kill her if she revealed the incident to anyone, stated the complaint filed by the girl in Vittal police station.
The police, who failed to trace the accused, had to face flak from various organizations which protested in Vittal, Puttur and Mangalore. Puttur MLA Shakuntala Shetty too had urged the police to take quick action in arresting the accused.
The police are yet to catch hold of the third accused Jabbar.
