BJP set for majority in Lok Sabha, Congress routed

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS): Narendra Modi created history Friday on his way to becoming India's 14th prime minister as he led the BJP to a spectacular victory in a Lok Sabha battle that crushed the Congress and others ranged against him and gave, for the first time in 30 years, any party a majority in parliament on its own.

Even political pundits gasped at the sheer scale of the Bharatiya Janata Party's sweep that election officials said was poised to give it a comfortable majority in the 545-member Lok Sabha even without the aid of its old and new allies.

The Congress, India's oldest party which had ruled the country for a decade since 2004, faced its worst humiliation. It had won three seats and was leading only in 39 more -- its worst tally in the Lok Sabha where it had never fallen to two digits. The Congress won 206 seats in 2009.

If it gets less than ten percent of the total number of Lok Sabha seats, its president may not be recognised as the Leader of Opposition, a cabinet rank.

The Congress did not win a single seat in seven states and it was unlikely to win more than 10 seats in any state.

A chastened Congress accepted defeat. Outgoing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh congratulated Modi who is still the Gujarat chief minister. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh summed up the mood in the country's oldest party by saying: "Our performance is worse than the worst case scenario."

Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who won easily from Rae Bareli unlike her son Rahul Gandhi, added: "The people's verdict is against us." Both took responsibility for the defeat, congratulated the BJP but didn't name Modi.

As an army of officials continued to count the 550 million votes 1.72 million electronic voting machines polled across the country, the BJP had won 26 seats and was leading in a whopping 255 others by 4 p.m.

The BJP is thus poised to bag a total of 281 seats in the Lok Sabha, where a party needs 272 for a simple majority. Modi is expected to be sworn in prime minister by President Pranab Mukherjee on May 21.

A visibly jubilant Modi promptly called on his ageing mother, the one person he respects the most, in Gandhinagar. Party colleague Ravi Shankar Prasad said: "The results show the people of India love Modi."

"The most fundamental factor behind such a decisive mandate is the all India anti-Congress sentiment," political commentator Dipankar Gupta told IANS.

BJP president Rajnath Singh described the party's victory as "superb" and said "a new era has begun in Indian politics." Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raj said Modi had "electrified the nation." Amit Shah, Modi's closest aide, declared that India was poised to see major changes in politics.

The BJP was poised to win all but seven seats in Uttar Pradesh which elects the maximum of 80 members to the Lok Sabha. The BJP-led combine was also poised to bag 31 of the 40 seats in neighbouring Bihar.

Interestingly, three of the four regional parties which too did well in their strongholds were not allied with Modi even if their leaders have had good equations with him.

Tamil Nadu's ruling AIADMK led by Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa will be the third largest party in the Lok Sabha. It was on the victory lap in 36 of the state's 39 seats - a showing that punctured long-time rival DMK.

In West Bengal, the ruling Trinamool Congress decimated the Left. It won three of the 42 seats and was leading all others in 31 constituencies. The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in Odisha is set to win 20 of the 21 seats.

The BJP's oldest ally, the Shiv Sena, was on the victory lap in 19 of the 48 constituencies. The Shiv Sena-BJP combine would win 40 seats in the state.

The stock market shot up on news of the imminent BJP victory.

All BJP stalwarts won easily including Narendra Modi, from both Vadodara in Gujarat and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. Other prominent BJP victors were L.K. Advani (Gandhinagar), Rajnath Singh (Lucknow), Murli Manohar Joshi (Kanpur), Nitin Gadkari (Nagpur) and Sushma Swaraj (Vidisha).

The only BJP leader who lost was Arun Jaitley, leader of the party in the Rajya Sabha who was trounced by former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh of the Congress in Amritsar.

Tens of thousands of BJP supporters celebrated the party's victory all over the country. In New Delhi, thousands gathered at the BJP headquarters dancing, bursting firecrakcers and distributing sweets.

Many Congress veterans bit the dust. They included Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, Ambika Soni, Kapil Sibal, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ajay Maken and Pawan Kumar Bansal.

The Left too suffered a major blow. AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, who claimed he would easily defeat Modi in Varanasi, lost by more than 200,000 votes.

    Dear Judith L, Mumbai,
Am with you on the expectation side. However, you are going to a greater length now that Modi is at the helm of affairs. Why? You did not have such expectations while Sonia mam was in charge of the nation? Rather than expectation, you appear to be frustrated with the democratic process of electing leaders that are not your choice. Don't worry, just like minority appeasement and leveraging secularism is a vote bank gimmick, saffron color is too. They are only important for garnering vote and it stops immediately afterwards. Then onwards it is business as usual. We had enough of UPA where power appears to wrest with someone but actually elsewhere, and in the same token accountability wrests with some one who has very little power. Modi for once cannot complain about that. Lets see what he can do for our country.

Thats what I hope where congress has failed, I hope he meets expectations of Indians, good roads, basic needs of people like food, clothing, shelter, education, sanitation, health to be met, child trafficking, child begging, child prostitution, child labour to be stopped completely since children are the future of the Country, criminals to be arrested and fast justice given to victims, job opportunity for all, get back swiss money, Improve agriculture, trade and technology, and yes, punish the actual perpetrators of crime and not target innocent victims/property of communities which are small in numbers, definitely with this agenda Modi will become immortal in history as just and intelligent leader who has treated everyone equally.

´Opposition leader Narendra Modi will be India's next prime minister, winning the most decisive victory the country has seen in more than a quarter century and sweeping the long-dominant Congress party from power, partial results showed Friday. As his overwhelming win became clear, Modi appeared before a crowd of cheering supporters and tried to strike a conciliatory note after a lengthy and punishing race. Although Modi's win was resounding, critics worry that his rise could worsen sectarian tensions between India's majority Hindus and its 138 million Muslims.
The outcome was a crushing defeat for the Congress party, which is deeply entwined with the Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty that has been at the center of Indian politics for most of the country's post-independence history.
The overwhelming victory gives Mr Modi a strong mandate to govern India at a time of deep social and economic change. India is in the throes of rapid urbanization and globalization just as the youth population skyrockets with many new voters far less deferential to traditional voting patterns focused on family lineage and caste. For the young Indian voters, the priorities are jobs and development, which Modi put at the forefront of his campaign. Although he has focused strongly on the economy, Mr Modi has given some hints of his foreign policy leanings, saying the BJP wants to strengthen India's strategic partnership with the U.S. and build on the foundations laid by the last BJP prime minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Ordinary people believed in his message during the campaign and wanted to give him the strong mandate he was seeking, to see if he could really change things in India.
Mr Modi said:”"I would like to reassure the nation that while we did not get to fight and die for independence, we have the honor of living for this nation.”´
The Editor of The Statesman, Ravindra Kumar, says in an outstanding article “Outcome at last”, published today:”He chose to keep his message simple, and focussed on development without quite defining it. His offer has received acceptance and the contract now signed will demand quite simply that he deliver on improving the lives of those who have put him in power.  If Mr Modi accepts and understands this, he will be a successful Prime Minister. Certainly, no one in recent memory has been as strongly empowered.”
The question is, will Mr Modi be able to achieve what he has promised?

    Best regards

Dear Dr Shankar Narayan, Mangalore/Abu dhabi,

Your comment says within 3 days will be coming down and GDP and Rupee will be strong.

We have waited during NDA Vajpayee rule.
Vajpayee was the most failed Wheel Chair Prime Minister of India.

He never did anything to the nation.
He only portrayed his poetry and Indians doesn’t need poetry but peace and harmony in the society.

NDA/BJP swindled money from Coffins and pocketed the money poured out by the citizens to the kargil war and to the soldiers. 2G was started by BJP/nda.

Our poor soldiers received only bullets. Also please remember in the two India Pakistan wars we haven't lost that much soldiers as we lost in Kargil war.

You have to read the history well.

Can a child study Gujarat text books wrongly prescribed nuclear bomb was The text books of Gujarat Educational institutions says

    "Japan d r o p p e d a nuclear bomb on US during World War 2",

Has he not /Modi first carried out atrocities Christians?

Secondly, He gave full hand to massacre Gujarati's in 2002 and eliminated all the evidences.

Now those pouring oil to the fire will be ruling.
Can anybody eradicate corruption from India.
    Tell me?!
Corruption is in the hearts and minds of the Indians.

Modi himself is a corrupt man.
Why he has not appointed a Lokayukta?!
Why he is keeping Mr. Solanki a corrupt minister in Gujarat?!
KINDLY REMEMBER POPULARITY, INDIA SHINING, FAKE DEVELOPMENTS AND SPECULATIONS WILL NOT BENEFIT ECONOMY.

Dr. Manmohan Singh was the Architect of Indian Economy since Late Rao’s government.

Now answer me why should I forget nda rule and what is the GDP OF 10 year of UPA rule and tell me what the GDP of NDA is for 5 years.

What Vajpayee has done to the nation in Wheel Chair after giving so many lectures to congress in the opposition?!

Also you tell me the scams of NDA and the BJP scams of Karnataka and Modi.

Without Lokayukta what would be the volume of corruption and such a huge amount was spent on election campaigning. Tell me.

Now can i tell you to forget Narsimh Rao and ask why Sonia Gandhi rejected prime minister Position. Did Abdul Kalam rejected as per bjp supporters overwhelming comments in daijiworld and other website a few years back and bowed down after abudl kalam's book.

Only one thing is clear with this result, no-one can fool the voters anymore. In Karnataka BJP saw the dust in assembly election because of the misbehavior of BJP leaders in Karnataka. In the same way Congress took it for granted the behavior of "anyway we will win" and worked only for their selfishness. So the voters showed them their place.

Now BJP government should note these and work for the betterment of the country while filling their pockets and favoring the top business class.

Though i do not believe in a phenomenal development of my country under new regime as i believe all political parties have same agenda of looting our country, i hope there would some remarkable changes and people will live in peace. Definitely RSS worked real hard for this victory and due credit goes to RSS at the first place. bad governance of previous government is second factor and BJP highlighted it wonderfully throughout its campaigning. Finally, Modi's Charisma literally worked out well because of the brilliant usage of social media, electronic media by BJP regime in which other parties couldn't even stand near to BJP.

I agree. Now NDA has a great chance to set their records straight on the complaints that UPA was making by keeping peace, unity and prosperity so that the next election UPA has no issues to raise. This will result in the issue based elections in the next elections rather than caste, religion or region.

    Congrats Modi & BJP.
Rajnath Singh was humble & wise in accepting the win for Change.
He knows the enormous task ahead, which only can be achieved in the longer run with inclusive rather than divisive agenda. Otherwise same fate awaits BJP in the next election as well.
Now rhetoric needs to be fulfilled which is the most difficult part of governance, but with the overwhelming majority no excuses can be given like past governments since 1990.
Ram Mandir issue needs to be solved within 5 years with mutual give & take.
Communal violence has to be curbed though they are known to pay electoral dividends to few parties.
Growth & Development with Employment generation should be the first priority benefiting all rather than few Industrialists.
India needs to be really Shining rather than in ads, which only lets a party to come back to Power next year too.

It is really a crushing defeat for Congress and UPA on the whole.

I expect, BJP to govern well and see India progress steadily. It may take some time for them to show the results of their development and the earlier developments will help them immensely.

With this loss Congress should mend their ways to give more time for the welfare of the country and the lesson learnt in this election (people just do not vote for the Party's name) that corruption is looked at by the voters as Vigorous NO NO NO and will change any Government in power if they do not heed to this warning.

I wish and congratulate all the BJPians here and request them to urge their Party to be people friendly with around development work.

Congress government functioned like a caretaker government from last ten years, as I said earlier the overall progress has been less than many other developing countries. India's huge population needs rapid growth performance, which BJP will provide. Congratulations to BJP and NDA for spectacular victory in the general election 2014. A well deserving win where I think BJP was contesting against BJP and not against Congress lead by Gandhi dynasty.

People of India have voted for a change and I hope we can see that change coming with so many promises made by Modi lead NDA Government.

With secular card congress have ruled India for so many years but in return given nothing to the minorities with whose vote they have won and ruled. So why not vote for BJP and expect better times for not only the minorities but also for all people of this great country India.

Congratulations to all the winning candidates and I wish even Rahul Gandhi had lost!

Pity for AAP as their wrong move to form the government in Delhi back-fired, otherwise they had fielded the best candidates.

Very sorry for Murli Deora, Priya Dutt, Kapil Sibbal, Jyothiraditya Scindhia. It is unfortunate that Arun Jaitly will not be part of the winning team!

Once again well done and congratulations BJP.

I think Modi deserves standing ovation. Two things that have happened:

    1. JDU Nitish Kumar over estimated himself and has been given a befitting reply by people in Bihar. All his claims of being the popular leader etc etc have fallen flat.
    2. All the third front distractions have been shown their rightful place. The small regional parties win 2, 3, 10 seats and hope for a bargain in govt formation. It is very heartening to see that the likes of Mayawati, Mulayam, Mamata, Jayalalitha have no role to play in the government and enact the drama of pulling out the support every now and then.

Its clearly the Leadership crisis spiced with poor Governance which led to the disastrous performance of Congress, BSP, DMK & SP.

Leaders like Jayalalitha & Mamata and Modi with proven track record of good governance coupled with astute leadership succeeded to influence voters.

In this context young Rahul Gandhi with no experience could not match these tall leaders. Modi Vs Rahul was a boon for BJP as Rahul couldn't match this comparison.

BJP succeeded because they projected MODI as ultimate leader that submerged all the differences in that party....

    Reasons for BJP win
    1. Inflation in last 10 years coupled with huge scale corruption. People started feeling that they are paying more price to fill the coffers of the corrupt ministers.
    2. Leadership - Congress lacked it, Modi fired it. People want a decisive Leader. (That was the usp of Indira Gandhi)
    3. RSS - This time RSS fully galvanized its force, did excellent ground work - went to the extent of sidelining Advani.
    4. Media - Congress had the knack of sending arrogant spokespersons like Manish Tewary, Sibal and Digvijay Singh. BJP had more reasonable people like Rudy, Smrithi Irani, Ravishankar Prasad and others.
    4. AAP - while in Delhi assembly election, AAP ate in to BJP votes. Subsequently BJP voters returned back to BJP, Muslims frustrated with Congress decided to go with AAP.

Finally, Majority of the people who voted for BJP are not anti-Muslim, but people looking for a credible alternative to Congress and looking for a strong leader. So the expectations on development is very high. Can Modi live up to it?

    Dear Dinesh

Our Ismail is so much devastated that he cannot read lines lines also properly. He removed one word proud and changed the whole meaning of it suit his own satisfaction on this mourning day. Like they did with the puppy remark and amit shahs revenge remark. Typical of them.

In a democracy, we should wholeheartedly accept people's verdict and will of God.
Some time we do not know what is good for us and what is not. Thanks for the clear mandate there is no coalition compulsions now. There is no competition or any barriers for good work, be it from anybody.
    Let's hope for the best.

Congtats!!This is clearly Modi wave. Indians expect too much from Modi. Let's hope he doesn't break down and keep up what he said.
Modi had well planned campaign whereas the congress lost big time in leadership and marketing.
Its better each party take turns in democracy since all are the same.

We have seen best Govts at Delhi in last 66 years of independence.ie.,
1.1977-1079 Janata Party Govt headed by Morarji Bhai Desai
2.1999-2004 NDA govt headed by Atalji
I am sure, the new Govt of NDA headed by Naresndra Bhai Modiji will out eprform even the above two govts in performance.
This is a win for the common man of great country Bharat....
    Jai Bharat maata...
    Jai ho Narendra Bhai Modi......
