Mangalore: Periyapatna accident – Deralakatte mourns demise of its residents

Mangalore, May 15: The entire Derlakatte area submerged in grief after the news of a ghastly accident at Periyapatna which took away the lives of its nine residents and injured 11, six of them seriously, on Wednesday May 14 hit them hard like bolt from the blue.
The accident occurred at Kamplapura near Periyapatna after a truck laden with LPG cylinders that was being driven recklessly rammed into the Tempo Traveller vehicle in which the victims were travelling.
Twenty-one members from two families of P H Mohammed, a bidi worker by profession, and his friend, Ameeruddin, a textiles merchant, and some of their relatives and friends had together undertaken pilgrimage to certain prayer centres in Tamil Nadu. They had left the city on Saturday, and were to reach the city on Wednesday morning. But hours before they were to reach their homes, destiny interfered with their plans.
The pilgrimage had been undertaken for praying the Almighty for the well-being of a child from the family which had been suffering from heart-related ailments, but the child concerned, Shamoon (15 months), also lost his life in the accident. The condition of the injured, Zeenath, wife of Mohammed, her sister-in-law, Bushra, Bushra's daughter, Safa, Zeenath's elder sister, Razia, and her children, Hafeez and Ifaaz, is stated to be serious.
State minister, Khadar, and former zilla panchayat member, Shahul Hameed, contacted local lauthorities at Periyapatna and arranged for all possible help to the distressed pilgrims. They also rushed to the spot, supervised rescue work, got post mortem conducted, and remained with the relatives till the bodies were brought back to their native places and cremated on Wednesday night. Former union minister, Janardhana Poojary, also met the bereaved families and offered consolences.
It is learnt that Asyamma from Tiblepadavu, who lost her life in this accident, had lost her eldest son, Mustafa, in a motor bike-tanker accident nearly three months ago.
While funeral of Safeeda, Samuna, Rukiya, Ameer , Fouzia and Esham were conducted at Badiya Masjid in Deralakatte, funerals of Junaid Khan was conducted at Faisal Nagar, Ayeshamma's at Asai mosque, and of Sharfuddin at Bantwal. Hundreds of relatives and sympathisers had gathered at these spots to offer prayers for the departed souls.

Mangalore, May 14: Several persons of two families from Mangalore died on the spot in a ghastly accident that occured at Mysore on Wednesday May 14.
At least nine persons died on the spot. Among the dead were three children and three women.

Ameer (55) and his wife Afsa (54), their daughter Fousia (27), Fouzia's husband Iqbal (31) and their children Esham (7) and Ishan (4), Afsa's brother Arif (19); along with Mohammed (40), his wife Zeenath (31) and their children Shamna (9), Safeeda (7), Shamoon (one-and-a-half years), Zeenath's mother Rukiya (55), sister Bushra (35), elder sister Razia, Bushra's daughter Safa (2), and Razia's children Hafeez and Ifaaz, and relatives Ayeshamma (60) and Junaid were in the tempo traveller. The vehicle was being driven by Sharfuddin from Bantwal.
Among the above, Ameer, Fouzia, Esham, Rukiya, Safeeda, Shamoon, Ayeshamma, Junaid and Sharfuddin have been confirmed dead.
The accident occurred between a truck and a tempo traveller at Periyapatna.
It is said that the family was returning from a visit to Muthupet Dargah in Tamil Nadu. Sources said that the deceased hailed from Thokkottu here.
The rest who were injured state-run hospitals at Hunsur and Mysore for emergency treatment.
"The accident occurred around 6 a.m. on the outskirts of Kamlapur village near Periyapatna (about 50 km from Mysore) when the two vehicles collided due to negligence and over-speed," Mysore district superintendent of police Abhinav Khare told IANS from the accident spot.
"The tempo driver died on the spot, while the truck driver survived. We have arrested him for investigation and registered an accident case against him," Khare said.
The truck was hired by the state-run Bharat Petroleum for transporting gas cylinders from Mangalore to other parts of the state and to Tamil Nadu for across-the-border distribution.
The bodies were brought to Deralakatte for the final rites. Hundreds of locals, well-wishers, relatives and friends gathered to pay their last respects. Health minister U T Khadar, who is also the MLA of Ullal, visited the area earlier in the day.
A case has been registered in Periyapatna police station.
