Minor fire aboard INS Ganga

Mumbai, May 9 (IANS): Four people -- two sailors and two civilians -- sustained injuries in a minor fire which broke out aboard the naval frigate INS Ganga here Friday morning.

The fire was reportedly caused by accumulation of gas in a chamber of the vessel where some welding work was going on, at about 11 a.m.

Four people suffered minor eye injuries, were rushed to a hospital for treatment and later discharged.

There was no report of any damage to the ship or its equipment.

Among other things, INS Ganga has been involved in securing the sea waters from piracy in and around the Arabian Gulf region.

This is the latest incident of big and small mishaps hitting the Indian Navy in the past few months.

There have been 12 accidents involving Indian Navy ships and submarines since last August. A total of 21 officers and sailors died in three mishaps.

March 7, 2014, a naval officer was killed and two labourers injured in a mishap aboard INS Kolkata at the Mazagon Docks Ltd.

Submarine Sindhuratna met with an accident Feb 26, 2014 when a fire onboard resulted in the death of two sailors.

Blasts ripped through submarine Sindhurakshak in Mumbai harbour Aug 14, 2013 killing three officers and 15 sailors.
