Kasargod, May 7: Kumble police led by circle inspector Suresh Babu on Tuesday May 6 night arrested notorious thief Ukkas Basheer (40) at Moodbidri.
The arrested is an accused in more than 25 criminal cases. He was released one-and-a-half months ago from prison. It is said that he committed several thefts even after his release.
The involvement of Basheer was known while questioning Jamya Moidu who was arrested by Badiadka police a few days ago. Basheer was released on March 22 after completing three-and-half years of prison sentence for several criminal cases. He is suspected to have committed four thefts after his release.
He is an accused in the theft of ten sovereigns of gold and a mobile phone from the house belonging to Peral Moidin at Kumble.
He had stolen cash from the donation box at the Talangare Taravadu temple, and laptop and bike from a house at Pilikunje. He is suspected to be involved in several thefts that occurred during the last one-and-a-half months.
Ukkas Basheer was produced in the court and remanded in judicial custody.
Jamya Moidu who was arrested after he tried to sell land with forged documents is suspected to have committed several thefts in Kasargod along with Ukkas Basheer.
It is said that Basheer had used Moidu's car to commit the thefts, and that the stolen goods were kept in his house.
Police have said that more such thefts may come to light if investigated. It is said that Moidu and Basheer committed thefts in Kasargod, Vidyanagar and other places in the district.
Police were stunned when they went looking for Moidu's house. He had a terrace house and a car parked in the yard.
Following information to the police that stolen items were stored in his house, a guard was assigned to keep watch on the house.
