Mangalore: First of its kind paediatric cardiac procedure done at AJ Hospital

Mangalore, May 6: A 12-year-old girl was suffering from breathing difficulty while playing. She was evaluated and found to have a hole in the heart - ventricular septal defect (VSD). VSDs were earlier closed by open heart surgery. For the first time in Mangalore, the VSD was closed in the Cathlab with a button like device made of Nitinol. 

Doctors at AJ Hospital completed this procedure successfully and the patient is recovering well.


This is a first of its kind case in this region.

The procedure was done by Dr Prem Alva, consultant paediatric cardiologist, AJ Hospital & Research Centre and was assisted by cardiac anaesthesiologist Dr Gururaj Tanthry. The procedure was done free of cost to the patient.
