DGP says no drug mafia in Goa, but beefs up ANC

Panaji, May 6 (TNN): Goa police on Monday sanctioned additional police personnel to its Anti-narcotic cell (ANC) to control drug trafficking in the coastal belt of the state.

Director general of police (DGP) T N Mohan, through a special order, has sanctioned 24 personnel and two police sub inspectors (PSIs) belonging to the India Reserve Battalion (IRB) to the ANC.

Superintendent of police (SP) ANC Karthik Kashyap said that the additional personnel would be deployed at frequently-visited tourist places such as Anjuna, Calangute, Morjim etc to check for open soliciting of drugs in those areas.

Last week, the DGP had taken a review meeting of all police cells to improve their functioning. Based on the review meeting, the police department on Monday sanctioned additional police personnel to the ANC.

Currently, the ANC strength is below 30 personnel which includes one police inspector and four PSIs. Last year, the police recorded its highest drug seizure in the state of 35 kg and locals, Indian nationals and foreign nationals were booked.

Last week, Mohan said there was no drug mafia in the state but said that drugs are available in the state.
