Karkala, May 6: Two ruffians, who are said to be accomplices of notorious underworld fugitive Udupi Kali Yogish, were arrested by Hebri station house officer, Seetharam, on Monday May 5.

They had reportedly called a textiles merchant from the town in the name of underworld don Ravi Poojary, placed a demand for hafta (protection money) amounting to Rs 50 lac, and threatened to kill the merchant in case of his failure to pay up this amount.

The merchant in question, identified as Hebri Yogish Bhat, is learnt to have been receiving calls from an unidentified person, who claimed that he was making these calls at the behest of underworld fugitive, Ravi Poojary. The caller directed Bhat to arrange for the above amount failing which he said the merchant’s life would be in peril. Bhat remained stoic, and chose to ignore these calls.

On April 25, two youngsters visited the home of Yogish Bhat, and told him that they had been deputed specifically to warn him, as the latter had chosen to overlook the telephonic demands. Warning that the textiles merchant would face grave consequences if he failed to meet their demand, the youth went away.

Yogish Bhat thereafter sought police protection. Taking serious view of the incident, under the directions of Udupi district superintendent of police, Boralingaiah and instructions of assistant superintendent of police, Annamalai, Hebri station house officer, Seetharam, and his staff, prepared an elaborate plan to nab the criminals.

Tellar Nitin (23), and Abubakker Siddique (26) from Balepuni, Bantwal were arrested in connection to this case. A case was registered against them in rural police station here. It is learnt that the accused also face a case of threatening a person of Kerala origin named Joy, who presently stays at Mala, demanding protection money. Joy is involved with operating stone quarries. They had fired in the air in order to intimidate Joy into making payment of money as demanded.

Yogish Bhat had succeeded in identifying the culprits after going through photographs found in the collection of police department. The policemen, who got information that the accused were lurking in Hebri area onMonday morning, raided the place and took them into custody.

It is unfortunate that underworld is having such network. I know many people have given Haftas fearing their life. I appreciate Mr.Bhat, who has shown courage in identifying such anti social elements. People of SK and Udupi should support such a brave people. And now on the youngsters falling into underworld circle is again unfortunate. Govt. should create proper job opportunities to the youth and ensure that they do not look at crime for making easy money.

Encounter is the best way to keep such criminals at bay and fear in other youngsters heading that direction. I guess commissioner should have the right to issue encounter orders in genuine specific cases...

Able bodied young men have got used to easy money. Either become member of some SENE, FEDERATION, or HAFTA lobby.

While some are members with a definite ideology, some are members for easy life. The people with ideology do not have time or desire to dirty their hands, they employ these for demonstration, street fights, throwing stones, calling bundh, gathering crowd and murder (when required). Once the taste is acquired, they will not change tracks.

We desire a better society, then people with extreme ideology have to take stock of their activities.

For personal milestones, they are holding the society to ransom.

What is the solution? - Dissolve the senes, federations, dals, sanghas, parivars and what have you. Let people use democratic ways to put forth their ideas and achieve their goals.

What kind of logic behind asking someone's hard earned money at the sharpness of the knife and bullet!

The law should be stricter to eliminate these extortionists and the type of menace.

Lock the both in a 6x6 dark cell for 50 months, one month jail for each lakh rupees of demand.

We work hard and these as#%$# want to take money from us. Wow their photographs in the police department. What a joke, that means this type of job is going on for so many years. So again the police department is going to leave them, so that they get to their business of robbing people and even they will kill to get so many lakhs. Get them on the streets and give them such beating so all the dons should go under their wife's sarees.
