Mangalore: Journalists protest against Abhaychandra Jain

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (DV)

Mangalore, May 3: Journalists working for various media in the city took to the streets here on Saturday May 3 protesting against Abhaychandra Jain, state minister for fisheries, sports and youth services, for allegedly threatening a reporter of a Kannada daily.

The protest was organized by the Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists' Union (DKWJU) near the DC's office.

Addressing the protest journalist Govind Belgaumkar said, "This is a democratic nation. The Constitution has provided freedom of expression as our right. Journalists are working within the framework of constitutionally provided rights. We will rise unitedly to protect our rights from suppression. We will strive to protect the freedom of the press. With this protest we need to send a clear message that we will not tolerate any kind of rowdy attitude, muscle power, or money power that are used to suppress the freedom of press."

P B Harish Rai, president of DKWJU said, "Attacks on journalists are repeating over and over again. Police are not ready to file FIR against the minister though there is a strong evidence of the recording of phone conversation. The police are asking the journalist to end the matter through compromise. The chief minister should intervene in this matter immediately and come out with a suitable decision on this issue through the media within two days. The government should also provide adequate protection to reporters, especially for those working in rural areas."

Journalist Ravindra Shetty said, "The government should provide good, supportive environment to protect the freedom of the press. Unfortunately, though the journalists are working within the framework of Constitution, they are being threatened. This should not repeat in future."

Jitendra Kundeshwar said, "Journalists are the ones who form the bridge between the government and the people. Hence attacks on journalists are attacks on people. Threat to a journalist shows the government's goonda attitude. 'Abhaya' means solace, moreover, he is follower of Ahimsa but this attitude shows that he is working against his name and community. We will not tolerate this kind of attitude. Journalists have no protection. It is a complete violation of democracy."

Ramakrishna said, "Though journalists are being threatened with gun, we will answer by pen."

Dayanand Kukkaje, Shrinivas Nayak, Irshad and others were present. A memorandum was submitted to the chief minister through the DC.

He not able to win in Muncipality election but he sitted in big position. Dis is surely drama to spoil name of Abhaya chandra

    Hi BALAKRISHNA, ALANGAR-MOODBIDRI,

Rightly said, Bangera is BJP worker. I think he has either become BJP worker after Jain threatened him or Siddu threatened all of us by expediting unwanted Niddodi project.

    @ MR. YASHODHARA BANGERA
    You are right on target.

BJP leader Eshwarappa, who don't know who is YASHODHARA BANGERA, is asking Jain's resignation sitting in Bangalore means, anyone can understand.

YASHODHARA BANGERA should maintain transparency in journalism or else, he should quit journalism & join BJP.

While condemning the way how minister Abhayachandra threatened the Journalists,I wish to state that in Mangalore/DK the journalist fraternity too is not playing its role fairly /impartially.First,everybodythinks they ar aboivce law and can protest/submit memorandum to DC for anything it does not not fit to their view. This is evident in the case of so called Mangalore Mist Home stay attack of last year.Had they be impartial that issue of gay partying might not painted as birth day paty attacked which the truth. The day befor voting in DK this election also they submitted a memorandum against Nalin Kumar as some mischieveous journlist palyed a role relating the issue to tapping trelephpone by Nalin which is also a fake charge. In fact Harish Rai needs to be more proactive in taking the journalists in taking them along with with message of free and fare unbiased journalism.0ost of journalists in their twenties and above and too immeture to understand the true meaning of free and fair journalissm.

Dear journalists, this issue is very small comparing to journalist Naveen Soorinje. When he was right,he has been put into jail at the time of BJP in rule. When Congress came into power, he has been released. I am just comparing but not my intention oppose your protest.

..it reflects your party love..a minister openly threatens a journalist to assault & bodily injure him, burn the newspaper, but for you its very small issue!!..ABHAYCHANDRA is minister, what he did in Mulky is fresh, what his colleague RAI is doing in Bantwal,Puttur area also very well known..Dont you think he is capable of doing, what he said?..He is DK representative we the people have the right to ask ABHAY & all other MLAs why they are cheating us on YETTINAHOLE & NODDODI..

In the world it is the greatest tragedy that life never tries to make reason with life....
This is the single most reason for all problems that surround us...
All want to protest about all things, whether necessary or not...
    Then throw stones on vehicles...
    After burn tyres...
After may be kill whatever on the way...
Protests like this are not responsible...
Especially when there is a scope to talk it out...

    Oh my god..!!

Yashodhara Bangera was in the forefront of the protest when Naveen Soorinje was in problem. Now see this poor Bangera, Naveen Soorinje & all those sickulars are not supporting Bangera due to their too much of party love.

I am not surprised even these sickular behave same when threat comes to their own children from their favorite sickular political parites.

    Hi JOHN R LOBO, Kaikamba/Dubai

Finally you found the justification that Soorinje is in Bangalore, hence can not attend. Guroo, good try... but very weak justification...

I give some tips to you... You can say Naveen Soorinje has gone for Chandrayaan and not possible to come to Mangalore in 3 days time...

Bangalore is very close overnight journey by bus & 1 hour by flight.. & also, there is no need to come to Mangalore. The protest march can be done in Bangalore also (like journalist done in Soorinje case), right in front of Vidhan Soudha where Abhaya (sorry Athibhaya) Chandra Jain resides..
