Mangalore, May 1: The police on Thursday May 1 arrested a person at Jainpete in connection with the murder of Sanjeeva Poojary.
Sanjeeva Poojary (70) was found hacked to death on Wednesday April 30 at Nooyi Darkas. He had taken a cow for grazing in the morning, but when he did not return home for lunch, his son-in-law went searching and found him murdered.
The police on Thursday arrested a man identified as Jawahar from Chhattisgarh, who was seen roaming around the town aimlessly, arousing suspicion among the Moodbidri police. It was later learnt that he had attacked Poojary as he was refused water.
Jawahar who had been involved in borewell work from two days seemed to be mentally unstable. He was wandering in the vicinity of Nooyi, near Maroor on Wednesday April 30 and had allegedly entered the house of fisherman Sulaiman. He then reportedly assaulted Sulaiman's wife Bi Fathima with a rod and fled the crime scene.
After the incident Jawahar went to Nooyi Darkas where he came across Sanjeeva Poojary. It is said that he requested for some water from Sanjeeva's water bottle. Sanjeeva who was relaxing under a tree, while his cow grazed, refused to provide water, following which an argument aroseand Jawahar brutally assaulted and killed Poojary, it is learnt.
Jawahar was spotted wandering in the surrounding areas of Mahaveera College in the wee hours of Thursday, with a bottle of water in his hand. He was later arrested by the police.
Police took him to the crime spot for investigation. It is reported that he could not remember the place where he stayed on Wednesday night.
Panambur ACP Ravikumar, Moodbidri circle inspector Vishwanath, SI Ramesh Kumar inspected the crime spot. Further investigations are on.
