Sesa Sterlite not to pursue lay-offs in Goa

Panaji, May 1 (IANS): Mining company Sesa Sterlite Ltd. has decided not to pursue the laying off of 1,017 employees in Goa, who had been issued notices in January this year.

According to a statement issued by the company, the decision was taken following the "initiative of the state government to formulate a transparent mining policy".

"The company has decided not to pursue the lay-offs till such a policy is announced," the statement read.

The lay-off notices were issued by Sesa Sterlite months after the Supreme Court banned mining in Goa, while hearing a petition on rampant illegal mining in the state.

Earlier, a judicial commission report exposed Rs.35,000 crore worth illegal mining in the state in which politicians, bureaucrats as well as mining companies were linked.
