Karkala, Apr 30: Biju Thomas, who was arrested from Gurgaon, Haryana in connection with the recovery of large quantities of explosive materials at various places in the taluk, was on Wednesday April 30 produced in court.
The court in Karkala remanded him in police custody for five days.
Biju Thomas from Kerala was absconding since the last week of March, when Karkala police led by ASP Annamalai had raided several places in the taluk and found ammonium nitrate and other explosive materials worth crores stocked illegally.
After a month's hunt, the police arrested him at Gurgaon in Haryana on Sunday April 27 night. He was brought to Karkala on Tuesday April 29.
However, the casual way in which Biju was being treated by the police made one wonder if Biju was arrested or had he surrendered. He was not handcuffed. Moreover, he was even seen talking on his expensive phone, 'relaxing' on a bench at the police station with his legs crossed!
Sources say that Biju has political backing which has helped him transport and stock tons of explosive materials around Karkala and other places. It is said that the explosives he stocked were used not only for quarrying but for unlawful activities as well. He had been arrested on earlier occasions too.
