Mangalore, Apr 30: An elderly person who had taken his cow for grazing was hacked to death by an unidentified person at Nooyi Darkas in Padukonaje near Moodbidri. The killer is said to have fled after the crime.
The deceased has been identified as Sanjeeva Poojary (70). He was from Hassan but staying in the house of his son-in-law Shekar Poojary at Padukonaje for the last three years. He used to take a cow for grazing to Nooyi Darkas.
He had taken the cow at 9 am on Wednesday April 30 as usual. He also took along items for shaving and a knife with him.
When did not return home for lunch, his daughter Jayanti grew worried and asked her husband to go looking for him. To his utter shock, Shekar found the blood soaked body of his father-in-law at the spot where the cow was tied. He rushed home and informed Jayanti about her father's death.
It is said that Sanjeeva Poojary had no enemies and the motive behind the murder is not known. However, his son-in-law said that the knife taken by Sanjeeva was not in the bag later.
Meanwhile, there were reports that an unidentified person entered the house of fish dealer Sulaiman at Darkas and assaulted his wife Bi Fathima and fled when she screamed. The injured Bi Fathima is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
It is suspected that the person who assaulted Bi Fathima might have killed Sanjeeva Poojary as he came in his way while trying to flee.
Moodbidri police inspector Vishwanath visited the spot and conducted inspection.
A case has been registered in the local police station.
