The accused however, succeeded in running away late night on Sunday April 27, it is learnt. He has been identified as Muhammed Shamir alias Shammi.
Dakshina Kannada district superintendent of police, Dr Sharanappa, taking serious view of this development, has suspended Bantwal police circle inspector, Rajshekar Maistry, and police constable, Sheshappa, who had been posted at the hospital at the time, charging both of them of dereliction of duty and failing to maintain law and order relating to the incident.
The SP has also asked the home guards superintendent to take suitable steps against the home guards who had been on duty at the time.
The department feels that the escape of an accused from the hospital in spite of posting of police personnel to thwart his attempts to escape is a serious matter which shows police department in poor light.
