Kasargod, Apr 28: Protesters led by Janapara Raste Horata Samiti on Monday April 28 blocked Badiadka – Kumble road protesting against irregular and shoddy road work.

Roads were blocked in several places in Badiadka and Seetangoli during the day-long protests. The protest turned chaotic when arguments eupted between the protesters and the police.

The protest was set in motion by Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Committee unit president S A Mayya. Horata committee president K N Krishna Bhat, Mahin Kelot, Balasubrahmanya, B Ramapatali, Jagannath Shetty, Mahesh Nidungala, B S Ibrahim Thomas and others led the protests.

Roads were blocked in Badiadka, Goliadka, Kanathila, Nirchal, Bela and Seetangoli.  Vehicles were parked across Nirchal to block the road.  Stones and other obstacles were kept in other places to block roads. The protest received wide support.

Representatives of various political parties, activists of associations, and the public fully supported the protest.  Auto rikshaw drivers parked their vehicles in the middle of roads to express their support. Porridge was prepared in the middle of Badiadka road as a part of protest.

Though tender for the road work was invited two years ago, the work has not progressed.

Minister of public works, V K Ibrahim had laid the foundation stone for the road work in May 2012.  The work has remained stagnant since two years and commuting has become difficult, the protestors said.

Although the elections are over and the corrupt politicians will soon be once again laughing their way to the bank, I think the helpless people as well as the ‘Janapara Raste Horata Samiti ‘ should lead a agitation against the sitting MP, P.Karunakaran and local MLA N.A Nellikkunnu.

These two are directly responsible for the shocking condition of this most important road link that serves so many villages to the Mangalore-Kasargod coastal highway, including school and college children in thousands who suffer every single day!

The last I heard is that MLA Nellikkunnu has been completely avoiding visiting the Kumble- Badiadka area, due to fear of acute public animosity. In fact, probably sensing the public anger, even the Imam of the Badiadka Juma Masjid and at the historic Malik Deener Juma Masjid recently refused a meeting with N.A Nellikkunnu.

People of this jurisdiction have been deprived from various provisions especially road and transport. Govt doesn't pay any attention to this region. if contractors have worked honestly, i say, the road work would have finished before a month.

Trust me.... this road has gone real bad.

I had been to home town for Easter, While coming back to Mangalore, i preferred going to Kasaragod and catching a bus to Mangalore rather than taking this road.

I Pity on the bus owners who run the buses on this route.

It is not surprising that the CPI(M) member from Kasaragod and Memeber of Parliment P.Karunakaran and local MLA N.A Nellikkunnu (Muslim League) have built huge shopping complexes in Kasaragod city and expanded their real estate empire while Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, the Minister for Transport, V K Ibrahim Minister of public works, and K. C. Joseph, Minister for Rural Development have been shamelessly promising for the last many years that all the pathetic roads in Kasaragod district including the shocking condition of the Badiadka-Kumble road will be set right on priority!

Yes, they do sanction funds for a complete 10 inch asphalting of the roads, running into hundreds of crores, funds from the public tax contributions, that quietly disappear into their own contractors who don’t even repair the pot holes and craters!

As someone who travels often on this particularly narrow stretch, I have noticed numerous agitation by the desperate and helpless public especially in Kumble, Seetangoli, Badiadka, Goliadka, Kanathila and Nirchal and Kumble, but sadly, it has all been futile. A day will come when the public may probably march to the home of these crooked, canny politicians.
