Mumbai, Apr 28 (Mumbai Mirror) : A 45-year-old man, who was arrested for killing one of his wives, died of a suspected heart attack after he was brought to the Saphale police station in Palghar for questioning on Saturday night.
Accused Prakash Bhoir, a fisherman, slashed his wife Preeti's neck after an argument in their son's presence on Friday night before absconding.
"Bhoir lived with his two wives - Preeti and Tripti, who are sisters - at Maykhop village. He has four sons - two with each wife. On Friday night, Bhoir, an alcoholic, came home drunk and got into an argument with Preeti. He then dragged her outside the house and slashed her throat before running away," said Nandkishore Saste, an assistant police inspector at Saphale police station.
The police booked Bhoir for murder, nabbed him from a brick kiln on Saturday and brought him to the police station. "At the police station, Bhoir complained of uneasiness and collapsed within half an hour.
We rushed him to the government hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival. We have registered a case of accidental death and are awaiting the post-mortem report. "We suspect he died of a cardiac arrest," said Saste.
According to family members, Preeti and her parents had approached the police on April 16 to lodge a complaint against Bhoir after he had assaulted her for not giving him money to buy alcohol. In her complaint, Preeti said that Bhoir would spend all the money she earned from selling fish on drinks. "She had told the police that she feared for her life. However, the police only gave Bhoir a warning and did not register a complaint," the family member alleged. Bhoir then allegedly assaulted Preeti once again for approaching the police.
