Mangalore, Apr 25: With an aim to improve the quality of life of children suffering from Down syndrome, JCI (Junior Chamber of India) and Rotary Puttur have set up a special school that will be inaugurated on April 28.

ROTA JC Down Syndrome Academy will open at Rotary Manisha Building located behind the AC office of Puttur. The school will start functioning from June 2.

The idea was conceptualized by president JCI Puttur Muliya Krishna Narayana on World Down Syndrome Day, when he took the lead in celebrating the day with specially-abled children.

Addressing a press meet here on Friday April 25, he said he was emotionally driven on realizing the need for a dedicated school to improve the plight of those affected by Down syndrome. He was inspired by Suresh Nayak, who despite being affected by this genetic disorder, has won a state award and several accolades and even set records for impressive memory skills.

"The school would be a role model for the nation. Classes will be held from Monday to Friday (10 am to 3 pm). Down syndrome kids aged between 5 and 18 are eligible for admission. There will be no hostel facility for the children. Rs 300 will be charged per students as monthly fees for the training," he added.

The school plans to offer full-fledged physiotherapy unit and vocal training classes in future.

May God bless all the persons initiating such a great feat...
It is not easy to defeat depression, even with the greatest of determination coupled with expensive drugs...
Down syndrome brings depression without personal indulgence...
Lifting the spirits of such children will go a long way in transforming our society into more tolerable ones...
    Best of luck...

Kids with Down Syndrome are slow learners and may get confused if they are taught too much at a time & this one would benefit for their growth definitely.
Scientists have for the first time 'switched off' the extra chromosome responsible for Down's syndrome that affects between 23,000 and 29,000 children born in India every year - the highest in the world.
Hats off JCI puttur, Muliya Krishna Narayana & team.
