Udupi, Apr 24: Policemen belonging to the district crime intelligence bureau (DCIB) here arrested four persons, when they were clandestinely lurking near Manippady Cross to execute a plan of robbery on Wednesday April 23. They are said to be accomplices of known ruffian, Santosh Poojary.
The arrested men have been identified as Mani alias Manikanta Poojary alias Sanjeeva (29), a resident of Karamballi Janata Colony in the town, Vishwanath (27) from Pitrody Udyavar, Haroon Rashid (30) from Shirva Topanangadi Bhootabettu, and Ashok G Poojary (29), a resident of Bolaragudde in Udyavar near here. Reportedly, another associate of this gang, Usman, succeeded in giving the policemen a slip. A sickle, a sword, a knife and a packet of chilli powder were recovered from their possession.
The operation to nab the youth was conducted under the leadership of DCIB police inspector, Praveen Nayak. The policemen claim that the persons arrested now are accomplices of Santosh Poojary, a known rowdy, who is presently lodged in Hindalga Jail in Belgaum. They added that the gang members, all of whom have criminal background, collected information about businessmen and industrialists from around Shirva area, and planned to rob them.
The operation to nab the gang was conducted under the guidance of additional superintendent of police, Santosh Kumar and deputy superintendent of police, Prabhudev Mane, under directions of district superintendent of police, Dr Boralingaiah.
