Udupi: Paryaya Swamiji clarifies on discrimination in Math

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Apr 22: Sri Vidyavallabhateertha Swamiji, head of Paryaya Kaniyoor Math, has expressed regret at the incident in which a lady was recently asked to get out of the dining hall belonging to the Math, as the hall was meant to serve food exclusively to Brahmin devotees.

Speaking to media persons here on Monday April 21, the Swamiji said that this incident had escaped his attention. He clarified that suitable steps have already been taken to address the issue.

"We will take care to see that such incidents will not recur. During the serving of food, I personally take care and keep interacting with the devotees. The Bunt community has always been very supportive of Sri Krishna Math, and its members have been solidly backing the activities aimed at serving Lord Krishna. I have special affection and respect for this community.

"We will ensure that no one faces humiliation henceforth, and the staff manning the dining arrangements has been directed to behave respectfully with everyone," he said.

    Dear Shridhar, Mangalore,
By the same token, niether are Bhaktadis doing any favor by visiting the temple or are forced to money in the box. Shall we leave the favor by Swamijis & priests to rest?
One way to avoid discrimination meted to non-brahmins is to stop providing food at all or charge for it. Provide some take home packs as prasadam. That way the discrimination can stop.

According to Mahabharata legend God Sri Krishna himself was from Yadava lower Caste.
So, upper caste people not giving equal opportunity to lower Caste Human beings to take Prasad-meals of lower caste God, is something very contradictory.

mr kunte, you should brush up your knowledge first.there is nothing known as lower caste and upper caste god.god took birth in all so called upper and lower caste just to give the message to humans that for him everyone is equal. but the stupid human beings of this planet earth still could not understand this simple message of god.

Fully agree with you. The Lords message is important and not to whom he was born to. Hindus believe Krishna to be Gods Avathar. He had not come here to divide us but only to spread the message. peace be upon all of us. let us not try to divide this great culture.

Sanath Kundapur you are right. Stupid people of earth could not understand the simple message of God, and still they discriminate caste-wise inside the temple and push out the woman sitting for prasada meals.
Let the people at the top ( Swamijis) understand this first and stop caste discrimination inside temple , and naturally all other common people will follow. Your advise indirectly aimed at all Swamijis is superb.

We are mostly educated enough to live, but when it comes to one's religion or caste the education itself takes a back seat and the knowledge we earned is somewhere worthless itself !!!

While discrimination is something the temple should consider seriously. In the 21st Century, where technology, materialism and individualism is taking center stage, discrimination based on caste and creed will not be tolerated.
I think it is the free food that is the problem. Of course poor people also benefit from it, but that can wait for another day. We have an aggrieved, influential Bunt Community's feelings to manage. The best thing to do is do away with free food and charge a token amount which should not be lower than that charged in the neighboring hotels. Priests and staff can anyway have food in their quarters. That way temple can save some money and all the Bhaktadis (Bunt Community included) can focus fully on the prayers and Dyana of Sri Krishna.

    @K. S. Mayya, Mangalore/Bangalore,
Do you think that Swamiji's & priests doing a big favor to devotees by feeding them free...???. The Swamiji and the priests are getting their living out of the donations given by the devotees, don't think that it is free meal given by Swamiji or temple priests...

Udupi temple should have been the best example against the discrimination on the basis of caste and color. Unfortunately, it is still not changed after more than 500 years, when kanaka dasaru showed them that, god is the creator of living things, but not caste.I completely disagree with udupi temples action against any devotee inside the temple. I request swamiji’s to follow their talks on the stages in front of large crowds for publicity and to show the world that they are the saviors of Hindu dharma. Please can they walk the talk? They forgot the meaning of kanakana kindi? They want once again lord krisha to show the way, like he did when these same people discriminated KANAKA dasaru?

any believer's faith should not be based on human's actions either good or bad, rather it should be solely based on almighty, because we are created by him and our loyalty is only for him and no one else.

I have a suggestion! Why cant dining hall divided exclusively for each community? One section Brahmins only, other section Bunts only, another section Billavas only and so on......so that every one is treated special and happy. what say?

Even god would not be happy when Brahmans are served special food and the rest are treated differently . This happens in most temples . Its Time the temple heads think about it .
At the same time government supports such discrimination by having reservations for different casts. A Brahmin student who has higher marks does not get seat where as a boy with lower marks gets the seat and same in govt jobs. Enough is Enough we are still following 18th century policy where as the world has moved on

Please do not talk like a congressmen dividing people on caste lines. The affected lady was from BUnt community, so the swamiji addressed this case in particular. The swamiji could have used the word all community, but since specificall BUNT SANGHA Udupi demanded explanation with him, he was obliged to answer them. Don't get carried away. This is was Poojary used to do in Mangalore, piticng various community against each other when he was in power.

What corrective measures have taken swamiji? Did you fire the person involved in the incident? or did you abolish the 'only brahmin'hall and made it use for all? Please clarify.

The incident is taking much time of Media.Had the lady known this fact that the dining hall is only for brahmins this incident never happened at all.The concerned mutt people should display proper boards in prominent places if the restriction apply in dining hall.We can blame only mutt people or brahmins.Unless our mindset is changed such things may happen in future also.I remember when so called lower caste or scheduled caste/tribe people prepared Bisiyoota or mid day meals in schools many so called progressive minded people instructed their children not to eat such meals. The only solution Pejavarashree can/may give that to give brahmin deeksha to other caste people who willing to be brahmin in future if possible or if the religion permits to do so

Dear Swamiji, may I know what do you mean by 'exclusively for Brahmin devotees'?. While accepting the 'haseeru horekanike' (offering of fruits, vegetables and raw rice) don't you accept from all the communities? Have you ever restricted Hore-kanike to only Brahmins? In what way do you feel and justify that Brahmins are superior to others in the civilized society? As I see they are also equally as bad as others in the society.

I have a special affection and respect for this community. Why only particular community, what about other community people? Have they betrayed you or Shri Krishna temple?Have they not contributed in the development activities of the Sri Krishna temple? There are many communities such as GSB,Devadiga,Billawas,Kulal,Gowdas etc.You mean these people have not contributed in their own way?Why this biased statement from the head of the Math?
