Mangalore: Two dead as tipper rams into Bolero and bike, locals catch hold of driver

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (NM)

Mangalore, Apr 16: Two persons including a child died and two others sustained injuries in a serial accident that took place at Gurpur here on Wednesday April 16.

The deceased have been identified as two-and-a-half-year-old Harshita and Babu (18).

A woman identified as Jaswinder (32) was seriously injured, while her husband Deepak (40) is said to be out of danger. Harshita was their child.

It is said that Deepak from Delhi was deployed at Mangalore airport circle. His Pulsar bike, bearing Uttarakhand registration number (UK08N7308), too carries the police sticker. It is learnt that he had brought his family from Delhi to the city and they stayed in a rented house near Kenjar.

The accident took place when a recklessly driven tipper lorry rammed into a Bolero and the police bike, before running over Babu, a pedestrian. Deepak was riding the bike while Jaswinder was sitting pillion with Harshita.

Eyewitnesses said that at Gurpur junction, a bus hired for election duty was trying to take reverse from a bylane. The Bolero moving from Gurpur highway from Kaikamba came to a halt to give space for the bus to take reverse. The Pulsar bike too stopped near the Bolero to wait for the bus to take reverse.

Meanwhile, a sand laden tipper lorry driven recklessly at a high speed came at them and rammed head-on into the Bolero and ran over the bike and then into Babu, killing him and Harshita on the spot.

Despite causing such horror, the driver of the lorry sped away in his vehicle without stopping. The locals who grew angry at the sight chased him down, caught him near Vamanjoor and handed him over to Bajpe police.

A case has been registered in Bajpe police station.

Its common all over India to sport POLICE sticker on non-police vehicle. In this context, I am sure Mr.Deepak is a CISF personnel. CISF is just a security force with no police powers. Just because they don the khakhi, they feel they are police too. Why isnt the police taking a drive against this?

RIP to those who died and injured get well soon. Thank you to those who showed the patience to stop and wait for the bus to take the reverse. and to those who caught the driver in Vamanjoor. Dear everyone take this incident as an example of what will happen if we don't show patience on the road. we everyone is driving on the road to reach safely to our destination and vice versa. If you know the traffic rules follow them promptly and if you see someone is not following tell them to follow it. Don't blame any authorities as nothing will change unless we change our attitudes. I do my best to follow all the rules and tell everyone to the same. Think Are u driving to do the suicide or to kill others. Everyone life is precious.Respect everyone.

Even if the roads are broadened, the reckless driving may not stop.
Broader the roads more will be the speed of these senseless/reckless(may be drunk also)drivers. In the first instance, they should learn to respect and value others life.

It is pathetic, our traffic rules are not strict. Secondly, our traffic department and police department has some of the staff very corrupt. People have been trained to pay bribes too. Fines have to be imposed and seen that the public is aware to drive safely. But , this can never happen in India, because we are a mixture of good and bad practices. no chances to improve or learn.

This is our regular way coming from Kaikamba to Mangalore. First of all inform the shop owners, temple and local people to clear the shops and broaden the road for free drive. Due to the narrow road coming from Kaikamba to Gurpur junction is a difficult task. At junction both side shops are close to the road, temple swamis and locals are not allowing to broaden the road and vacate the shops even for an inch as support from Bajrangdala and BJP. Gurpur junction curve is very critical and dangerous for small vehicles while giving side to broad vehicles. Politicians please look this matter very seriously.

It's a very sad incident, life of a human has no value. I have seen these sand tippers going at high speed and braking suddenly causing danger to others who are driving smaller vehicles. And the width of the tipper is also broader. It's difficult to overtake them or they dont give way if its approaching from the opposite side... Some has to do something otherwise we too will loose our loved ones
My condolence for Harshitha and Babu may your soul rest in peace
