Mangalore, Apr 16: Journalists in the city on Wednesday April 16 met deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim and submitted a memorandum seeking action over alleged threats to a reporter of a Kannada news channel, after the channel flashed a news regarding BJP candidate Nalin Kumar Kateel's alleged phone calls to a woman.
On Tuesday April 15, Independent candidate Sudatt Jain released press note to the media alleging that Nalin Kumar had made 3,742 phone calls to a woman between August 1, 2011 and July 2012, and between November 2012 and October 2013. These call details were recorded in a CD, Jain claimed. Jain also stated that an appeal has been submitted to the district election officers and the police department to conduct a probe into these phone calls.
Following the release of the press note, Suvarna News channel as well as some of the print and electronic media carried the news.
It is said that after the channel telecasted the news, its journalist Sukesh Kumar, who reported the news, began getting threats on social media like Facebook and WhatsApp. Some people even called up Sukesh directly and threatened, it is alleged.
Hence, the journalists in the city met the DC and urged him to take action in the matter and also provide adequate security to Sukesh Kumar.
Sukesh Kumar has also filed a written complaint with the police, the memorandum stated.
A copy of the memorandum was also submitted to the DCP.
