Bangalore: Demand for excommunicating anti-Catholic priests from Church

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Apr 13: In a first major offensive against the group of priests coming under the banner of the Karnataka Kannada Catholic Yajakara Balaga (Karnataka Catholic Priests’ Association) and their supporters, who have been creating problems in the Archdiocese of Bangalore since the last several years by raising the bogey of Kannada language in liturgy, a large group of Catholics held a demonstration in front of the Archbishop’s House on Saturday and later submitted a memorandum to the Archbishop seeking excommunication of the priests involved in ''un-Christian activities."

The gathering of Catholics and Christians, who had assembled in front of the Archbishop’s House under the banner of the Federation of Karnataka Catholics and Christians Associations (FKCCA) under the leadership of its President T J Abraham, anti-corruption and social activist, also comprised Federation of Konkani Catholic Associations (FKCA) Chairperson Aida D’Cunha, former FKCA Chairman Charles Gomes and other key leaders, met Archbishop Most Rev Dr Bernard Moras and presented their memorandum listing 15-points as the grounds for seeking the extraordinary step of excommunication of the consecrated priests.

The FKCCA, which has also forwarded a similar memorandum to the President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), the highest decision-making body of all Bishops in India, at its office in New Delhi, said all the priests involved in anti-Catholic and un-Christian conduct and behaviour must be Excommunicated from the Catholic Church, under the provisions of the Canon Law forthwith, as they are guilty of willfully violating and deliberately flouting their solemn religious vows of obedience and loyalty to the Ecclesial superiors.

''In addition, some of the above-mentioned priests are guilty of violating the Sixth and Ninth Commandments that forbid killing or bearing false witness, which are consequently sufficient grounds for their automatic excommunication," the memorandum said.

Abraham said the FKCCA has already received support from several Diocesan and Religious priests as well as Sisters. ''However, we have asked all the religious priests and sisters not to openly come out in support at this stage. They can join us later as and when the situation demands. This is our first step. We have mobilized a gathering of 300 persons now. It will be followed up with a gathering of 3,000 and then 30,000 and finally 3,00,000 from all over Karnataka," he said pointing out that the momentum is building up as majority of the Catholics and Christians feel ''enough is enough and that it is necessary to stand up and fight."

Guilty of Causing Disrepute to Church

''We, the Catholics of the Archdiocese of Bangalore, wish to express our deep sense of regret and distress at having to submit this representation on some of the burning issues pertaining to the Archdiocese of Bangalore, especially the “un-Christian" activities of some of our own consecrated priests, along with some lay persons and sincerely request that the points raised by us after serious thought and deliberations be given serious consideration and acted upon immediately in the interests of maintaining the Unity, Dignity and Sanctity of the Church, as also to instill the faith and confidence in our faithful," Abraham said in the memorandum.

The immediate cause for submitting this representation, he said was the fallout of the investigations by the Bangalore City Police in the gruesome and most brutal murder of a highly scholarly, erudite, peace-loving, well-respected and mild priest like Rev Fr K J Thomas, the Rector of the St Peter’s Pontifical Seminary, Bangalore, on the midnight of March 31-April 1, 2013, within the precincts of the Seminary itself.

The ghastly murder of Fr K J Thomas, by the assailants and the ransacking of his room and other rooms in the Seminary by the attackers, and the inability of the police to crack the case and track the suspected murderers had shocked and saddened not only us but all peace-loving citizens in the city.

A large number of organizations had organized candle-light vigils and other forms of protests, offered prayers and Holy Eucharist for the successful completion of the investigation besides submitting memoranda to the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Home Minister K J George,  while the Archbishop of Bangalore had met the Chief Minister, Home Minister and the State Director General of Police besides the State Governor H R Bhardwaj on different occasions. Some of the family members of the deceased Fr K J Thomas had even approached the Karnataka High Court by moving a Writ Petition seeking entrustment of the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Ulterior Motives behind Agitation

''We strongly suspect that some priests and other powerful persons in the Archdiocese and possibly in other Dioceses are either directly or indirectly involved in the ghastly murder of a highly respected and well-loved person like Fr K J Thomas, either to gain control of the Seminary or even gobble up of valuable property granted to the Archdiocese for establishing the Seminary, especially in view of the hard reality that an acre of land in the area is worth around Rs 5 to 10 crore and that the Seminary has several acres of underutilized land, even though portions of the land granted by the erstwhile Maharaja of Mysore had been alienated in favour of other religious congregation and even for the establishment of a high school for Girls," the memorandum explained.

It was in these circumstances and almost a full year after the murder of Fr K J Thomas, the Karnataka Director General of Police and Bangalore City Police Commissioner and other top police officers announced at a widely publicized news conference on March 21, 2014, the arrest of three persons , including 2 priests – Fr William Patrick, Parish Priest of the Kengeri Church, and Fr Elias Daniel, belonging to the Order of Discalced Carmelites (OCD) - and a lay-person Peter, for the murder of Fr K J Thomas. The DGP, City Police Commissioner as well as the Joint Police Commissioner of Bangalore, who addressed the press, had disclosed that the investigation was ''incomplete" and a more startling revelation was that ''several more persons are likely to be arrested soon."

Though almost after a full year, the police claimed to have cracked the murder case and achieved a major breakthrough by arresting 3 persons, including 2 priests, with this the faithful as well as the clergy and religious brothers and sisters could heave a sigh of partial relief, with the assurance from the police that ''the investigation would be completed soon and more arrests would be made in the due course."

''But, we have been deeply pained, shocked and angered by the action of some of our own priests and laypersons, who had addressed a widely publicized news conference at the Bangalore Press Club on March 22, 2014, and made their outlandish and evidently unfounded claims in public, that the 3 arrested persons were 'totally innocent’ and that they had been 'falsely implicated and even framed.’
These priests went to the extent of claiming and blaming without producing any shred of evidence, that our beloved Archbishop of Bangalore, State Home Minister K J George, and the former DCP Victor D’Souza, who had retired from service on February 28, 2014 of 'hatching a conspiracy’ to pin the blame for the murder of Fr K J Thomas on the 3 'innocent persons’ to fix them," the memorandum said pointing out that it was the duty of the Archbishop as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Seminary to vigorously pursue the case and exert pressure on the authorities to expedite the investigation to nab the culprits and take necessary action as per law.

Priests Identified, Named

The memorandum has named the following priests, who have been named as the ring-leaders: Fr Chalkere Chowrappa Selvaraj (Chasara), Parish Priest of St Joseph’s Church in Chamarajpet,   Fr A Thomas,  Parish Priest of Kristha Karunalaya Church Jaraganahalli, Kanakapura Road and also the Principal/trustee of Christ School, Marianapalya Road, Kaglipura, privately owned and run by his own Carmel Seva Sangam Trust, Mariapura and Fr S Bartholomew, Parish Priest of Parish Priest of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Tumkur,  and Fr Fathiraj.

In addition, names of the following priests have been cited in the memorandum for their involvement in the so-called agitation spearheaded by the Kannada Catholic Priests Association: Fr L Arulappa, Manager & Correspondent St Aloysius Educational Institutions, Sarvajna Nagara, Fr Antappa, Archbishop's House, Fr J Santiago Administrator, St Mary's Minor Basilica Church Shivajinagar, Fr J Francis Xavier, also from St Mary’s Basillica, Fr J Balaraj, Parish Priest, St Pius X Church, St Thomas Town Post, Fr R Balraj, Parish Priest, St Joseph's Church, Channapatna, Ramanagar District, Fr C Peter, Assistant Administrator, Legal, Rent and Property, Archbishop's House, Fr James Prabhu, Parish Priest, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Mariapura, Thattuguppe Post.

All the priests named in the memorandum, according to FKCCA President T J Abrahm, have been ''the main trouble-makers in the Archdiocese of Bangalore, for their own selfish reasons and ulterior motives of gaining positions for themselves or their supporters, including some of the silent and behind-the-scene kingpins, who are angling for key Ecclesiastical positions in the Archdiocese."

The Kannada Catholic priests, who have been publicly agitating against the Archbishop and causing disrepute to not only the Church but the entire Christian community by their un-Christian and anti-priest behaviour, by ''pretending that it is meant for gaining primacy for the Kannada language in the liturgical celebrations, only to misguide people and shamelessly causing violent protests and law and order problems in several churches, including the Christ the King Church, Yeshwanthpur, which is adjoining the St Peter’s Pontifical Seminary, by going to the extent of pouring acid on the then Parish Priest, Fr Lawrence Noronha, obstructing Holy Eucharist at St John the Baptist Church, Vijayanagar, and physically assaulting and attacking  Fr C Jacob, a Kannadiga priest, while celebrating  the “Holy Mass" in Kannada, in the St Mary’s Church at Hegde Nagar and several other churches over the past several years, especially and intentionally during the Holy Week Liturgical celebrations preceding Easter or Christmas celebrations."

''Kannada in Liturgy is just a Bogey"

''Will anyone fighting for the cause of Kannadigas attack Kannadiga Priests while celebrating a Mass in Kannada?," Abraham asked and mentioned that these priests with their anti-social supporters, including those from the self-processed communal forces and anti-minorities, especially Christians and Muslims, bringing Kannada writers and other busy-bodies like Chidananda Murthy and Kannada Rakshana Sene etc have been holding violent protests, demonstrations on the streets and in front of the Archbishop’s Residence and even preventing Holy Eucharistic celebrations in several places or forcing the Church authorities to conduct liturgical celebrations under police protection.

''We have authentic and credible information obtained from various sources regarding the so-called widespread fund collections carried out by these priests through several fraudulent means and organizations, which according to our reliable information, runs into several crores of rupees to finance and sustain their sectarian and selfish agenda," the memorandum claimed.

''These people are creating an impression that the whole episode is against the Anti-Kannadiga attitude of the church authorities and aimed at fighting actions/moves that are intended to suppress the demands of Kannada speaking Catholics in Karnataka," it said, adding: ''This is absolutely false and fabricated, only to misguide and fool the Kannada speaking Catholics’ in Karnataka and make Catholics in Karnataka feel frustrated and disgusted with the Catholic Church itself.   We have reliably learnt that it is a conspiracy to intentionally create an unhealthy atmosphere in the Catholic Church and also to divert the attention away from the actual issue only to save the culprits in the murder case."

Reiterating the charges leveled by him at a press conference recently on the huge sums of money collected by the priests belonging to the so-called Kannada Catholic Association, he said that ''documentary evidences of police complaints regarding the some of the shameful and unlawful activities, violent incidents and other illegal activities involving most of these priests in different police stations, which would be furnished in due course."

In this very tricky situation, we need to go to the gospel for guidance: Jesus showed no prejudice against anyone! He asked the Samaritan woman for water, He chose to stay at the house of Zaccheus, who was looked down upon by other Jews. If we are followers of Jesus, we need to imitate him and encompass everyone with love and forgiveness. No one should be excommunicated unless his guilt and lack of contrition are proved without doubt! No one should consider that his/her parish church is exclusively for services in one language!
Let's pray that the murderer/s of Fr. Joseph are duly exposed, let's pray that unity and harmony may be established, with all individual churches welcoming people of all languages, as Jesus would have done.

We expect priests to be holy- not murderous villains. If they do not live up to their vocation they should be defrocked. If they do not repent (and we should pray that they do) and continue to publicly spread hatred and violence they may have to be excommunicated. I have heard that some of these priests have lived lewd lives breaking the 6th and 9th commandments, but I object even more to their breaking the 5th commandment 'Thou shalt not kill' and their murderous invective and self-seeking behaviour spreading disharmony in our Archdiocese. I don't know much about Canon law, but feel what is applicable by that law implemented and applied to religious concerned who goes against that law, including defrocking ,it is better to have a few religious who are committed to Christ rather than having a huge number whose commitments are elsewhere .I feel the representative from the Vatican , Archbishop ,the CBCI represtatives and balaga priests need to have a meeting, the Vatican representative make the concerned understand what the Catholic christian faith stands for and the need for concerned to adhere to Catholic and christian values and what is required .If the concerned repenent we will have these born again catholic religious who will be a great asset to Christainity.

It is very unfortunate that the language issue has become a major problem particularly in Bangalore. It is time that all Christians and more particularly the clergy realize this concept instead of fighting with one another.

In all this tangle it is unfortunate that Archbishop Bernard Moras has to bear the brunt.

The language problem is not new to Bangalore. It has been there for decades and every Archbishop of Bangalore has gone through this trauma even earlier.

I would, however add that a few well meaning Catholics of The Diocese of Bangalore along with other well wishers meet the leaders who are creating this situation and try to reason out with them and even arrange counseling sessions for them.

This kind of curse (forgive me for using this term) should be eradicated by all means to ensure that occurrences like these do take place in the future.

I join scores of people in saying to The Archbishop that we are with him in thought and prayers.

Word of God says: Luke 6:12-13 Jesus prayed the whole night before choosing his disciples. My concern is whether these priests are chosen as per the will of God, through prayer, with the proper family background. Are they worthy to become a priest is the basic question and doubts comes in the minds of Catholics in Bangalore. We are Choosing the Evil one to serve our Precious God. Are they Holy? Why then the Authorities silent about it? Why Truth was suppressed till today. It is very clear from the intention and action and their behavior they want to Serve the Language not the Lord Jesus They have not encountered with Jesus They do not know who Jesus is? They do not have the fear of God! They been asking where is God? It is the shame to call them first of all Catholics, calling them priest is long way to go, Are they worthy to be in the place where they are occupied. Are they obey the Leaders of the Church? Blessing comes from the obedience, Judgment comes from the disobedient.
Pakistan is demanding for the Kashmir, they are ready for anything. The Evil one is controlling their minds and their every action. Similarly, our Kannada Balaga Priests demanding Kannada seminary, Kannada Bishop, After sometimes Kannada Pope and later may be Separate order. Are they blind? St. Paul says I am ready to become prisoner for Christ Jesus. But our kannada Balaga priests are ready to become Prisoner for Evil one. One who does the work of the Evil one cannot be called son of God. They do SIN, Let us brake this " I " culture, then we become sons of God. One must have Lot of Patience, Kindness, Understanding others, Generous, self control, moreover 1 John 48 God is love if they do not have love in their heart they do not know the God.

"When elephants fight the grass suffers". Greed for money, positions and power that may be has destroyed the values. The Parishioners are the victims. A set of few priests with evil designs have formed the Balaga. They have disobeyed the authority of the church. Spreading false information shall not bring any goodness to the priests. Enough trouble has been created in the diocese of Shimoga, Mysore etc... If it is not contained, this will spread to all over Karnataka dioceses. The tolerance of the Authority and the forgiveness, and prayers for their conversion has shown hardly any results over the decades. It is known that the Sacrament of Confirmation are due for over 8 years in a few parishes that are headed by these Kannada Balaga Priests. Thanks to those parish priests who have no concern for the Catholic Children in their parishes . If parish priests are not duty bound why should they be there?? Is this Balaga Priests taking the Arch Diocese of Bangalore and other dioceses in Karnataka for a ride ??

As almost everyone staying in Banagalore understands Kannada, Parishoners should stop insisting on services to be held in languages of their choice. What kind of Christians are these, who are creating divisive politics and fighting among themselves in the name of a language ?.

The issue of language is happening more than 40yrs in churches in Bangalore and some parts of Karnataka.

After the formation of Mysore State in 1956, this movement of Kannada took place and this language issue cropped up in the churches and it was mainly instigated by the priests who feel they have been sidelined and to settle the scores, they have bought the language issue.

The solution which is taken by the FKCCA is not in the right direction, No doubt the Kannada Balaga of the priests itself is not in the principles of the church.

Involving all the laity, priests of all affected in this linguistic issue can be solved by addressing their grievances. What is required here not sorting out the problems by brains, but reaching out to the hearts of the aggrieved. How the leaders handle the situation, is left to them. Wisdom and right decision.can lead to a permanent solution. The win win solution to all, is the right path.

Ephesians 6:12 Our battle is not against human forces but against the rulers and authorities and their dark powers that govern this world. We are struggling against the spirits and supernatural forces of evil. The three main arrows of Devil is 1) Greed of the Flesh, 2) Greed of the Eyes 3) Boasting superiority, 1 Timothy 6: 9-10 Those who tries to be rich fall into temptations and traps. A lot of foolish and harmful ambitions plunge them into ruin and destruction. Indeed the love money is root of every evil. Because of this greed, some have wandered away from the faith, bringing themselves afflictions of every kind. James 1:26 Those who think they are religious but do not restrain their tongue, deceive themselves and their religious is in vain. James 4: 1-3 What causes these fights and quarrels among you? Is it not your craving that makes war within your own selves? when you long for something you cannot have, you kill for it and when you do not get what you desire, you squabble and fight. The fact is, you do not have what you want because you do not pray for it.

You pray for something and you do not get it because you pray with the wrong motive of indulging your pleasures. James 4:7 says Resist the devil and he will flee from you, instead of we resisting we are assisting the devil, he has put the wheelchair on our head and we are become his slaves. God commanded us subdue & have control over the earth, today we are becoming slaves of the earth why? Draw close to God, and he will come close to you. We have heard the very popular passage from bible Bartimus who is blind man, He had a great desire to seek Jesus, one day Jesus was passing his way, He loudly cried out, many of them shouted and asked him to keep quiet. He realized one thing, he need Jesus not the surrounded people. As soon as Jesus heard he did not take another step, Jesus did not come to the blind man instead he commanded the blind man to come to him. It is we have to come close to God, & he will come close2u

Those who are disobedient should leave the priesthood and lead civil life. Pope Francis hasn't spared even German Bishop who lavishly leading life. Once you ordained priest means you cannot do whatever you want. There is no discrimination in the catholic faith. Here in the Gulf we have mass in all the languages according to the strength they have. Bishop of Banglore neglecting demands of Konkani speaking people too.

Last year there was trouble for Konkani Christians from Kannada speaking Christians in one of the church in Bangalore and things took ugle turn and Konkani spwking people have to resort to protest in front of the said church.Really a painful matter,if people are allowed to do the prayer service in their mother tongue. It pained me much when I saw in the press the group of people agitating for their rightful prayer.I had brought this to one of the members of Karnataka Konkani Acadamy but this issue was not received the academy's attention.I hope that this situation should not again and hope that the present governing body of KKA will come to the help of Konkani speaking Christian community.Partisan attitude among priests is type root cause of the situation.

Those people, priests and pastors who love only one particular language are not following the teachings of Jesus and they can't love God and humans.

Language is only a medium of transaction and understanding each other’s perceptions.

Dear Christians I sincerely and humbly urge you all not to fall prey to the language lover’s divisive tactics.

If possible learn multiple languages for your own benefit and there will have no loss to anybody whatsoever.

All languages are good in its vocabulary, goodness sweetness and in its essence which is evident only when we speak and transact in such languages.

    Just pray....
    And everything will be alright.
    May God bless you all

Mr Abraham, excommunication is a medieval tool of the clergy to control people. Instead, you ask them to expel from the Bangalore Archdiocese. Thereafter, let the law take its own course. I do not think once a priest is ordained the Church cannot revoke it. It is a big question. There are some strange traditions in the canon law too.

I have another doubt, is it your demand is stage managed by the Archbishop Bernard Moras? Clergy are capable of all kinds of tricks!
