Mangalore, Apr 7: The district JD(S) on Monday April 7 said that it would toil hard in backing SDPI candidate Mohammed Haneef Khan and push him to win the MP seat from Dakshina Kannada constituency, with the sole aim of battling down key national parties in the district.
District president of JD(S) M B Sadashiva in joint press meet convened by the JD(S) and the SDPI here at Janata Deluxe hall said his party on the directions of the high command is extending unconditional support to Haneef.
"The decision was taken with the aim o defeat UPA that has been sinking in scams and allegations, failing to fulfil the aspirations of the citizens of the nation. At the same time, we are all set to give tough days ahead for the communal force BJP that chants divisive politics to come to power," he said.
"This time in the parliamentary elections party supremo Deve Gowda will play a pivotal role during the formation of the government which would be led by the Third front. In the district, the party considering the strength of the SDPI has decided to sacrifice its candidate for Haneef. Both the parties are confident of wining the elections defying all odds. People of the district are desperate, searching for an alternative party that can fulfil their aspirations. So people will vote for JD(S)-backed SDPI to shun Nalin Kumar Kateel and B Janardhana Poojary in the elections," he said.
When press persons asked about allegations that SDPI candidate was being backed by Harsha Moily to spoil the chances of his political rival Janardhan Poojary, Sadashiva said such questions should be thrown at the Congress party, as 'they would know the reality better than JD(S)'.
"However, SDPI has its own strength in the district. It does not need Moily to back up to spoil Congress’ fortunes. Moreover, Haneef will win the race in the constituency. We are fighting elections on principles and ideologies laid by the party at the time of its birth," he said.
However, on the sidelines of the press meet M B Sadashiva confirmed to daijiworld that Haneef was backed by Moily, and it was 'unfortunate'. "We have no other option but to follow the instructions of the high command," he asserted.
Aboobakkar Kulai, district president of SDPI said the party was stepping up the campaign taking all the grassroots level party workers into consideration. Several rounds of campaign have been completed, with leaders visiting most of the taluks and every corner of the villages, he said.
“In response to our campaign people have expressed solidarity saying they would vote for SDPI to see changes in terms of development in the district," he added.
