Mangalore, Apr 4: A teenage girl died in an explosion resulting out of gas leak in an apartment at Kadri Kambala road here early morning on Friday April 4.
Bharati (14) died while her parents Shivananda (40) and Bhagya (35), and brother Anjaneya (15) sustained serious injuries in the blast.
Shivananda, from Haveri, is employed as a watchman at the residential apartments where the incident occured. He stayed on the upper floor while his family lived in a room on the ground floor.
Early on Friday at around 4.40 am, Shivananda sensed the odour of a gas leak emanating from his room and went to check. His wife and children were sound asleep. Shivananda entered the room and switched on the light, when all of a sudden there was an explosion in the room.
It is said that vapours from the gas leak had filled the room, and when Shivananda switched on light, it resulted in the blast. The entire room was in flames.
Bharati died on the spot while Bhagya, Anjaneya and Shivananda sustained burn injuries. They were admitted to a hospital.
Fire personnel rushed to the spot and managed to douse the flames.
Kadri police are investigating.
