Gold worth Rs.1.7 mn seized at Goa airport


Panaji, March 31 (IANS): Customs officials Monday seized gold worth Rs 1.7 million from a resident of Chennai at the international airport here, a statement said.

The statement issued by the customs department said that the accused had travelled to Goa from Mumbai by an Air India plane and had been handed over the 600 gms of gold by an international passenger at the Mumbai international airport.

"The passenger on being questioned about the reason for his Goa visit, informed thathe is into sale of supari (betel nut) and that he has come to take orders form the big hotels in Goa," the statement reads, adding that the passenger stumbled when he was questioned further by the Customs officials.

Customs officials are now trying to track down the international passenger who had passed on the gold to the accused.
