Beltangady, Mar 31: A pedestrian was knocked down and killed by a Tata Magic vehicle near Perinje within the limits of Venoor police station on the evening of Sunday March 30. The ill-fated pedestrian has been identified as P T Hasainar (52), a resident of Ashraf Manzil in Ganadakottige in Perinje in the taluk.

Hasainar used to operate a shop at Kurlottu. He was walking from his home towards his shop, when the vehicle in question, which was coming from the direction of Beltangady, hit him before being driven away. Hasainar, who suffered extensive injuries, died on the spot.

The policemen, upon being informed of the accident, promptly located the vehicle, under the guidance of sub-inspector, Abdul Khader. The vehicle belongs to a person from Taccode near Moodbidri, and the prompt action of the policemen came in for lavish praise. The vehicle, it is learnt, had brought people from Taccode to Beltangady, in connection with the christening ceremony of a child. The accident had occurred when the vehicle was returning to Taccode, and the driver, developing cold feet at this sudden development, had chosen not to stop the vehicle.

The vehicle was coming to Beltangady from Moodbidri again to pick some more people from the said function, when the policemen stopped the vehicle and cross-checked with the evidence they had with them.

Even after the policemen located the vehicle, the driver initially insisted that he was not involved with the accident. However, a spare part that had got detached from the vehicle and fallen off at the accident spot, exactly matched with the missing part of the vehicle. In the face of irrefutable evidence, the driver, Frankie Cardoza (56) from Taccode, confessed to the accident. He was arrested, and a case was registered against him.

The deceased is survived by wife, four sons, and a daughter, it is gathered.
