New Delhi, Jun 4: Embarrassed by Rahul Mahajan’s hospitalisation after a party, the BJP on Saturday sought to wash its hands off the controversy saying it was a tragedy in the family of its late leader Pramod Mahajan and it had nothing to do with it.

Seeking to wriggle out of the situation emerging from reports linking the junior Mahajan’s lifestyle with the party’s values, BJP spokesperson Sushma Swaraj said, "It is a tragedy of the family. The party has nothing to do with it. It can happen in any family."

She was talking to reporters after a meeting at Leader of Opposition L K Advani’s residence which discussed among other things the issue of the President returning the Office of Profit Bill to the Parliament.

Sushma claimed that the meeting did not discuss the Rahul Mahajan issue.

The manner in which the party did not celebrate the children of its leaders scoring high marks in the examinations, it had nothing to do with their personal lives as well, she said.

Senior BJP leaders including party president Rajnath Singh visited the young Mahajan at the Apollo Hospitals on Friday.

Prior to Rahul’s hospitalisation, the late Mahajan’s close aides and supporters were seeking a role for him in the party organisation while several senior leaders had expressed serious reservations on the grounds that he was not "cut out" for politics.

Delhi police to probe drug angle in Rahul case

"Though the test conducted on Mahajan confirmed faint traces of drugs, they are very much within the permissible limit and therefore the report for them is negative. We do not examine traces. We only examine whether a sample is negative or positive for any particular drug," Apollo spokesman Karan Thakur told PTI when asked on reports of drug traces in Rahul's urine sample.

Earlier in the day, doctors attending on Rahul had said that he had tested negative for 14 identifiable drugs.

However, they said they were not able to give the exact cause of his clinical condition.
