Mumbai, Jun 4: The police have seized a leopard skin worth Rs 40,000 in the market and arrested two persons on the charge of poaching endangered animals, police said on Saturday.
The police acting on a tip-off yesterday that the accused were planning to sell the leopard skin the police raided their house in suburban Kurla and seized the skin.
In several cases earlier, police have seized animal skins but the incidents of poaching continue, police said.
Though the authorities have fenced the boundaries of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in suburban Borivali, leopards come out from the forest in the night and stray into nearby areas. Cases of attacks on humans have also been reported, they said.
However, police said it was not clear whether the skin seized in yesterday's raid was derived from a leopard poached in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. “Investigations have not yet thrown light on this aspect”, an official said.
