Mangalore, Mar 9: Two persons were arrested by the city police on Friday March 7 relating to a case in which a student was abducted, taken to a desolate place, and assaulted, before dropping him off in the city. Reportedly, the student in question, Likhit Shetty (22) from Suratkal, was unable to repay a loan he had taken from one of the assaulters.
Likhit is an electronics and communications department student of an engineering college. He works as plumber and does other works involving physical labour after college hours, to finance his education. If the work assigned to him does not get completed till late in the night, he stays in Venkatesh Building near Srinivas Talkies in the city at Lower Car Street. On the night of March 6 too, he had stayed in this building.
It is learnt that early morning on Friday, Vinod from Jeppu and Nitin from Yeyyady forcibly entered his room, dragged LIkhit out of the room, and took him in their scooter to the Central Market area. Once there, Kiran, who owns a fruits and vegetables shop at the Central Market, demanded the money he had lent to Likhit, back. Likhit expressed his inability to pay up the money.
Kiran reportedly called someone thereafter, got LIkhit seated in an Alto car, and took him to a lonely place near Ladyhill in the city. Once there, Kiran took a wooden stick with sharp edges, and hit Likhit in the arms and knees, while Nitin and Vinod landed blows on his back and face. Likhit says that the trio then took away Rs 500 he had in his pocket, after beating him up till 2 pm that day. He was then dropped off near Balaji Junction, the student said in his complaint.
Likhit said he had borrowed Rs 60,000 from Kiran, and he was beaten up because Kiran was angry at non-repayment of the loan.
A case in this connection was registered in Bunder police station here. The policemen have arrested Vinod and Nitin, both of whom were produced in court. They have been remanded to judicial custody, while Kiran has remained elusive.
