Mangalore: Financial dispute: Student abducted, beaten up, two arrested

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Mar 9: Two persons were arrested by the city police on Friday March 7 relating to a case in which a student was abducted, taken to a desolate place, and assaulted, before dropping him off in the city.  Reportedly, the student in question, Likhit Shetty (22) from Suratkal, was unable to repay a loan he had taken from one of the assaulters.

Likhit is an electronics and communications department student of an engineering college. He works as plumber and does other works involving physical labour after college hours, to finance his education. If the work assigned to him does not get completed till late in the night, he stays in Venkatesh Building near Srinivas Talkies in the city at Lower Car Street. On the night of March 6 too, he had stayed in this building.

It is learnt that early morning on Friday, Vinod from Jeppu and Nitin from Yeyyady forcibly entered his room, dragged LIkhit out of the room, and took him in their scooter to the Central Market area. Once there, Kiran, who owns a fruits and vegetables shop at the Central Market, demanded the money he had lent to Likhit, back. Likhit expressed his inability to pay up the money.

Kiran reportedly called someone thereafter, got LIkhit seated in an Alto car, and took him to a lonely place near Ladyhill in the city. Once there, Kiran took a wooden stick with sharp edges, and hit Likhit in the arms and knees, while Nitin and Vinod landed blows on his back and face. Likhit says that the trio then took away Rs 500 he had in his pocket, after beating him up till 2 pm that day. He was then dropped off near Balaji Junction, the student said in his complaint.

Likhit said he had borrowed Rs 60,000 from Kiran, and  he was beaten up because Kiran was angry at non-repayment of the loan.

A case in this connection was registered in Bunder police station here. The policemen have arrested Vinod and Nitin, both of whom were produced in court. They have been remanded to judicial custody, while Kiran has remained elusive.

Dear Abishek,Ravi Shenva, Your suggestion is 100% correct, but do you encounter/approached any nationalized bank for loan, then you may realize the heat of it. They may ask never ending supporting documents in order you should not visit them again and disturb to their routine. I have good experience with one of the Nationalized Bank even though I’m banking with them last 35 years(NRI) finally approached private bank and my job finalized within 7 working days. Do you think RBI help in this regard? I think you people are joking.

Caught in between educational ambition/aspiration and financial crises. Tough time for this lad.

Hope some organization or philanthropist will come forward to help Likhit to fulfill his ambition in life. May God bless him?

When Likhit is studying for Engineering Course, he could have borrowed the amount from some Bank as Educational Loan instead of borrowing from blood sucking private financiers. Since many poor students do not have proper information about Educational loans given by nationalized Banks they land up at private financiers den and ultimately get beaten up.
Banks should give more publicity for Education loans. It is also the duty of Colleges to provide proper guidance about Educational Loans available from Banks at reasonable repayment period. Many colleges have Tie-up with certain Banks.

Probably you people have not approached any bank with written application at all. Because now RBI and Finance Ministry have made it mandatory for Banks to give loans without asking for any Collateral Security up to Rs.4 lakhs and with just two personal Guarantee up to Rs.7.5 lakhs loan and with Collateral Security above Rs.7.5 lakhs loan. Even if the applicant is just a labour giving loan is mandatory. Of course the Student should have secured more than 50% of marks in SSLC and PUC.
If at all any Nationalized Bank branch refuses to give loan or asks for collateral Security then the student or parents can immediately complain to RBI or Head Office of that Bank and disciplinary action will be taken against Branch Manager who refused such Education Loan. Even if any Education Loan application does not conform to the criteria than Branch Manager has no power to decline the same orally but he has to forward such application to his Regional Office and only R.O. has power to refuse any Education loan application. It is compulsory for the Branch Manager to give in WRITING the reason for declining any Ed.Loan. This will help student to take up the matter with RBI.
Without knowing LATEST Educational Loan Rules some people blame the Banks with old prejudices. Time has changed for good now.
This Student-friendly Rule has been enacted by the Finance Ministry of Congress Govt.

Feel sorry for the student for the sad incident. It proves that, there is no night city patrolling by police. I admire the boy for his hard work. Being E&C student does the labor work to perceive the study. You are great. You are a model exam to those who lavishly spend parent’s money and get 0 results. God Bless you and your all dreams comes true
