Mumbai, Jun 1: The South-West monsoon has entered Mumbai with torrential showers lashing the metropolis on Wednesday and injuring many.

Heavy rains pelted Maharasthra's coastal region, where the monsoon hit train services as the weather office predicted more showers in the state.

Three people were injured when lightning struck and an seventeen in a wall collapse in Mumbai where the rains were preceded by gusty winds that uprooted trees and knocked out power at many places.

Konkan and central Maharashtra have had widespread rains since Tuesday evening with Ratnagiri recording 64 cms of rainfall.

Trains have been affected on Central Railways due to an overhead cable that snapped at Ghatkopar. The water is upto the platform level at Sion station.

The electricity services at Mahim in Central Mumbai have been disrupted.

Traffic jams have been reported on the Eastern Express Highway and waterlogging in parts of Chembur, Borivali East, Malad West and Dahisar East. Huge jams have also been reported on northbound roads at Mahim and Bandra.

In the last 24 hours up to Wednesday, 45 mm of rain has been recorded at Santacruz and 128 mm at Colaba. High tide was recorded at 4.20 metres.

In the next 48 hours,heavy to very heavy rains upto 20 cms are expected.

The BrihanMumbai Corporation (BMC) is gearing up for a 48-hour alert. All ward officers are to stay put in their respective area control rooms for the next three days.

Rs 1 lac given has been advanced to the ward officers for labour, machinery and trucks in case of emergencies.

Three-hundred labourers have been deputed to removing debris where the roads were undergoing construction.

BMC has tied up with mobile operators for providing weather forecasts and civic updates through SMS.
