Mumbai, May 30: Three members of Ravi Pujari gang were arrested by the Mumbai Crime Branch on Monday for allegedly attempting to extort money from a Andheri-based hotelier, police said.
The trio had reached at a place close to Mumbai University campus at Kalina in Andheri on Saturday to collect the first installment of the extortion money of Rs 5 lakh, when they were arrested by anti-extortion cell of Mumbai Crime Branch, police said here.
The Pujari gangsters have been identified as Mohamed Nazir Mohamed Husain (27), Paraj Chachad (40) and Eknath Nikam (24). They were produced in a local court today and have been remanded to police custody till June 6, police added.
According to the police, the hotelier had been receiving threatening calls from abroad made by one David since April this year, who asked him to shell Rs 25 lakh failing which he would be killed.
The hotelier in turn lodged a complaint with Mumbai Crime Branch, leading to the arrest of the three gangsters.
