Mexico city, Feb 26 (IANS): Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, world's most wanted drug lord and the leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel, was formally charged by federal courts in Mexico.
The charges were made Tuesday by the Third District Court of Federal Penal Processes and the Fifth District Court of Federal Penal Processes separately, reported Xinhua.
A statement issued by the third district court said Guzman, who was arrested over the weekend after escaping 13 years ago from a maximum-security prison in western Jalisco state, has three working days to appeal the charges.
The drug kingpin, 56, may be charged with additional crimes, including money laundering and possession of military weapons, prosecutors said.
'El Chapo' or 'The Shorty' was arrested Saturday in Mexico's northwest resort of Mazatlan, Sinaloa, the main bastion of the cartel.
