Mangalore: 35-year-old Sunil D'Mello loses 92 kg through surgery

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Feb 22: A person, who was finding it impossible to manage his ever-increasing body weight, approached the doctors of Kasturba Medical College Hospital in the city. The doctors successfully performed bariatric bypass surgery on him, and he has lost 92 kg weight.

Sunil D’Mello, the beneficiary of this surgery, has now been able to live normally like most of his peers.

D’Mello (35) weighed 181 kg till two years back. Because of excessive weight, his health had deteriorated. D’Mello had been facing the problem of accumulation of body fat and increasing weight since childhood. With the reduction of weight consequent to surgery, D’Mello now weighs a far healthier 89 kg.

The issue of overweight has haunted him since his childhood.  Sunil weighed 102 kg when he was 15. In 2005, he started suffering from acute backache. He approached a popular center which helps in weight reduction and over the course of six months managed to lose 30 kg but unfortunately he gained back 45 kg within the period of next three months. He then tried Naturopathy and lost about 15 kg which he regained once more within 2 months. He also followed dietary advices given online for reduction of weight, but none of them helped, stated a media release.

"My decision changed soon after my son was born. In May 2010, I realized that it was very hard to play with my little son who had just learned to crawl. This motivated me with fresh imperatives to lose weight and I approached the doctors from the general surgery department at KMC Hospital, Mangalore," Sunil was quoted in the media release.

He came to KMC Hospital in 2011, and the above procedure was conducted on June 30. After keeping him under observation in the hospital for three days, he was discharged, with advice for making food habit changes and exercise regimen to be followed. The media release from the hospital said that Sunil has undergone a sea change in his health condition with reduced weight, and he has now been able to lead normal life.

It is indeed a great TRANSFORMATION for Sunil.
However, it is always safe and cautious to get the Bariatric surgery done under a Expert Team like Renowned Surgeon, Dietitian, Physician etc. Can anybody share the Concerned department number of KMC hospital??

Gastric bypass and other weight-loss surgeries does not address the root cause of weight gain.It does not teach lifestyle change or address emotional eating. Tell the patient to figure out the root cause and start a solid strength training program and eat calorie restricted smart food. Starving will not help him anyway. After weight loss surgery, success is a long-term project. But if you can stick with a healthy diet and exercise, experts say you’ll enjoy extremely satisfying results.

Thank you Daijiworld for running my Weight loss story. It was really surprising to see myself on your portal.
Its been one hell of a ride.
The initial weeks of re-adjustment, relearning how and what to eat, dealing with initial rapid weight loss etc are anything but easy, but worth every moment now. Your whole outlook towards life changes.
The surgery itself isn't such a big thing, it was performed under the capable hands of the HOD of Surgery, KMC, Dr. Alfred Augustine. There are initial rounds of assessment that you need to undergo (Tests, Consultations) before the actual operation. Its not a quick fix like a cosmetic surgery. It need around 8 - 10 days of hospitalization and around a week of recovery. Its a life altering procedure and requires dedicated participation from your side, sticking to the prescribed diet, maintaining some amount of activity and overall will to tackle any unforeseen problems head on. And loads and loads of family support .. (Very Very Important)
The weight loss happens on its own, as the stomach capacity is reduced. Initially i was sipping teaspoons of water, now, i can enjoy a whole bottle of beer. (Though carbonated fizzy drinks and alcohol are strictly not advised). From a quarter of a slice of bread initially, i can now have a whole Burger.
On the flip side, there is initial weakness, bouts of dizziness, hair loss, flatulence, which all stabilize after a few months.
It's been nearly a year since my weight has been steady at 87-89 kgs. I do not do any strenuous exercises to maintain it. Just mild physical activity now.
It is a very expensive procedure and not covered under any mediclaim or insurance policies. If you are really obese and have tried out everything but still regain the weight, then i would honestly suggest the procedure. (By really obese, i mean at least 50 kgs over your ideal weight) Its not for the weak hearted or minded.
For more information, i can be contacted on sunildmello@rediffmail.com
    Thanks again Daijiworld
    Sunil

Everything in moderation, No need for diets. What they say is good for you today will be bad for you tomorrow. So eat what you like but not too much of it like a Hog.

Very happy to see the dramatic achievement of sustained weight loss and good health achieved after the bariartric surgery!!

Though routinely performed nowadays, a very strict protocol is followed before opting for the surgery with the surgeon, psychiatrist, counselor, and dietitian!! And the surgery has several different types out of which the surgeon will chose the most pertinent one to the case!

Though it has its advantages, it has cons too!! Dumping your excess weight and its associated insecurities in a bariatric clinic may sound like a fairytale fantasy, but it is anything but. Even if your surgery is a breeze and you lose all the weight you wanted to, life doesn't always get the Cinderella ending you had hoped for.Apart from the immediate risks of complications associated with a major surgery, you put yourself at risk of a clutch of problems: osteoporosis, anaemia and other nutritional deficiencies, bowel obstruction, gallstones, hernia, ulcers, stomach perforation, and/or gastric dumping syndrome, characterized by frequent diarrhea and vomiting.
And then there's still more - depression, alcoholism and suicide.
All bariatric "weight-loss" surgeries aim to make you eat less. They involve either stapling or banding your stomach to make it smaller, or creating a gastric bypass, where the stomach is made smaller and the gut shorter.
While these surgeries treat and even cure severe obesity-related conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, sleep disorders and Type-2 diabetes, they may be increasingly being misused as just another way of losing weight.

The min cost could be 2 lacs and further for postoperative care and many patients may need very long term postoperative followups in the hospital.

Pl. note some of the above material has been extracted from the net.

    What is bariatric surgery
Gastric bypass and other weight-loss surgeries make changes in the digestive system to help to lose weight by limiting how much one can eat or by reducing the absorption of nutrients, or both. Gastric bypass and other weight-loss surgeries are done when diet and exercise haven't worked or when the individuals have serious health problems because of the weight. There are many types of weight-loss surgery, known collectively as bariatric surgery. Gastric bypass is one of the most common types of bariatric surgery. Many surgeons prefer gastric bypass surgery because it generally has fewer complications than do other weight-loss surgeries. Still, all forms of weight-loss surgery, including gastric bypass, are major procedures that can pose serious risks and side effects. Also, one must make permanent healthy changes to the diet and get regular exercise to help ensure the long-term success of bariatric surgery.
