Udupi, Feb 17: The election commission has issued notice to Karkala MLA V Sunil Kumar, who is also the chief whip of the opposition in the Karnataka Assembly for violating the election code of conduct.

The notice was issued based on a letter of complaint dated November 11, 2013 by Shubadh Rao, member of Karkala municipal council.

The complaint states that V Sunil Kumar had printed handbills for the elections for Legislative Assembly held in May 2013 with pictures of Karkala Bhagwan Bahubali, St Lawrence Church, Attur, Karkal, Koti Chennaya and other deities, thereby contravening the elections code of conduct.

Shubhada Rao said that people's belief in God should be in their heart and not in the handbills. "The candidates should state the development programmes by them and not show the pictures of gods. It is BJP's old habit to politicize votes for religion and that he has complained to the election commission so that the party stops such malpractices at least after this," he said.

"The religious pictures shown in the handbills are not the property of any one party. They are symbols of universal beliefs. While there are followers of those religions in all the parties, how could they restrict the beliefs to one party," he asked, adding that the complaint based on those points has received positive response and that he is confident that the election commission would take suitable action in the matter.

Years back it was alleged that Sunil Kumar had tried to attack parpale cross in Attur. And also it was told that he used to make hate speech towards Christians. But it is good that he has used St.Lawrence picture in his hand bill. Hope it is indeed a change and was not done just for the sake of elections.

Mr. Shubhad has done the right thing. People should not mix religion with politics. They know to fool people by playing religion card and once win their goons will attack those same church & will forget the people as well as God. Trust a snake, but, never trust crooked politicians who pretend themselves as very God fearing.

Is it a "real change" you are pointing out abt this MLA's attitude towards all religions?

Where is the need to print those on the bills when such things are banned? Is he not flouting the EC rules and COC code there by opposing a Government Rule? If MLA who should be guiding people the correct way become a transgressor of the law, then how the people of his constituency can take him seriously on anything he says?
He can profess his tolerance towards all religions when the EC ban is over. Why he has to do it only during this time? That shows his intention are for creating unnecessary controversies\discussions over the matter when those should be avoided altogether.
I would very much want him to publish these handbills after the elections are over and prove his tolerance towards all religions by professing the same.... will he do that?

Many congress MLA's take oath other than written in the constitution. According to article 188 a political representative can take oath in the name God. Many congress MLA's take oath on Voter's, Farmers, Kannada, Karnataka, etc. Election commission and CBI can send a notice only to Congress rivals.

Sunil Kumar just printed handbills with religious elements. I don't have any problem with this. Sunil Kumar did not try to vomit communal venom. Sunil Kumar is a good MLA who works for the people. We have seen the work style of our ex MLA Gopala Bhandary and we gave the opportunity to Sunil Kumar and Sunil Kumar is doing a great job as MLA. God bless Sunil Kumar. We need more MLA's like Sunil Kumar.

This is a modes operandi by sickular elements to defame BJP.What is wrong in printing handouts as narrated by Rao.I have seen many occasions wherein candidates visiting temples, churches, masjids, basdis seeking blessings before filing nominations.Practically this is not bhakthi but only a show of to garner votes of respective religious people.only few have real faith in all types of worshipping places like SunilKumar. He is a ardent believer of Attur St.Lawrance Church many times he visits there seeking blessings. One should not question ones beliefs.
Nobody has questioned in Mangalore J.R.Lobo,Yogish Bhat visiting Kudroli Gokarnanath temple seeking divine blessings before filing nominations for assy poll recently.Rao's exercise reminds the proverb "bele daanthina..... baleda pee****n kettiyege"!!!

There is no doubt that Mr. Sunil Kumar has softened his hinduthwa ideology drastically after winning this MLA election. I personally like him to be representing our constituency in the State Assembly. I find no offense in his printing all religion deities in the handbills. This signifies his stand that he believes in all religion and treats them equally. Its a different issue that Election commission does not permit this kind of act. But there is no reason for opposition to take this issue to EC. Simple publicity stunt by the Opposition party.

    Right Mr. D'Mello,
If he has portrayed the images of belief of all, then where there is partisans attitude.
However, E.C. has code of conduct.
At the same time Mr. Sunil Kumar has changed for the better, from his hard core attitude to a moderate. Let us acknowledge it.
